Nutrition Factdle #56 (Oct 19): a tub of Phillips crab meat from Food Lion beside its nutrition label with calories, fat, cholesterol and protein blank, and a price box

Nutrition Factdle shows one real packaged food a day, the shop and town where it was priced, and its nutrition facts label with a few values blanked out. You guess the price and the missing numbers, get a tick or an arrow on each, and revise over up to three attempts, or tick Confident for one guess at 1.5 times the points. The game gives its serving size as 90 seconds.

About Nutrition Factdle

Nutrition Factdle is a daily estimation game laid out as a nutrition facts label. Each numbered puzzle shows a photo of one grocery product, such as a tub of Phillips crab meat from a Food Lion in Smithfield, Virginia, with its brand, the shop and the town where the price was taken.

Beside it is the product's label: servings, serving size and most of the nutrients, but a few lines are left blank. Which ones changes from day to day: calories, total fat, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrate, fibre or sugars. You fill in the numbers you think belong there and type a price in dollars, then press Submit. Each answer comes back with a tick when it is close enough or an arrow telling you to go higher or lower, and you get up to three attempts to revise.

Scoring gives up to 100 points per category and 50 bonus points for finishing in under 90 seconds. Ticking Confident before you submit gives you a single guess at 1.5 times the points, so it pays to be sure. When you are done you can share your result.

Everyone gets the same product on the same day, and there is no sign-up and no ads. On a phone the product, the label and your score sit on three tabs. It suits shoppers who read labels, anyone curious how much fat or sugar is really in a snack, and fans of price-guessing games who want more numbers to think about.

How to play Nutrition Factdle

Tips

  • Use the calories: fat has about nine per gram, carbohydrate and protein about four, so the blanks must add up.
  • Fibre and added sugars are part of total carbohydrate, so they cannot be larger than it.
  • A food with no carbohydrate and no fat, like plain crab or chicken, gets nearly all its calories from protein.
  • Think about the shop, the town and the pack size when you guess the price.
  • Leave Confident unticked unless you are sure: three attempts with arrows usually score more than one wrong guess.
