Noozli's board for 27 October 2026 on a phone: sixteen newspaper tiles with headline halves such as Top mayoral aides launch, with Back, Show all, Match and 2 for 1 tools below

Noozli is a daily matching game built from real US local news. Each evening's edition shows ten headlines from independent newsrooms; you read them, then move word tiles one space at a time until each headline's two halves meet, and afterwards tap any headline to read the story at its source.

About Noozli

Noozli publishes a new national edition every evening after 7pm US Eastern time, numbered from the first edition in October 2026. Each one holds ten real headlines from local and independent newsrooms across the United States, such as state capitol bureaus and city news sites, and every player gets the same ten.

The game starts on a pregame screen of the day's full headlines, and the idea is to remember as many as you can. Then the headlines are cut in half and scattered as tiles. You move a tile one place in any direction, and when the two halves of a headline end up side by side the match clears. Four extra tiles scroll across the top for filling empty spaces, and tools let you go back, reveal all, show a match or make two matches in one move. The aim is to finish in the fewest moves, and good scores go on that edition's leaderboard.

When the board is clear, the post-game screen lists the headlines, and each one opens the full article on the newsroom's own site. An archive keeps every headline the game has used, and if a day has fewer than ten fresh stories, it is topped up with headlines up to 72 hours old that have not appeared before.

Two other modes sit beside the daily edition. Noozli nearby lets you choose your states and plays from a rolling pool of their headlines from the last 72 hours, with no leaderboard. Pic your nooz does the same with the halves of ten news photographs from the past week.

Since late October there is also Game Day Nooz, a sports edition published every morning at 8:30am Eastern at noozli.news/sports. It uses the same matching board with ten sports headlines from local newsrooms, mostly the previous night's games, and keeps a leaderboard of its own. Each day also brings a new song from the Jamendo library to play behind the board.

How to play Noozli

  1. Open noozli.news, press Play and choose Noozli nation for the day's shared edition.
  2. Read the ten full headlines on the pregame screen and try to remember them, then press Play.
  3. Move a word tile one place in any direction until both halves of a headline sit side by side; the pair then clears.
  4. Tap one of the extra tiles scrolling across the top to fill an empty space, and use the tools only when you are stuck.
  5. Clear all ten headlines in as few moves as you can, then tap any headline to read its story.

Tips

  • Spend time on the pregame screen: knowing which halves belong together saves far more moves than the tools do.
  • Look for distinctive words such as place names or numbers, since they make the two halves of a headline easy to spot.
  • Pick your home states in Noozli nearby for a second round built from news closer to you.
