Motplot's Mini Mot for 18 October 2026 on desktop: a 5x5 grid of letter tiles with star cells to fill, the next letter U above and four hearts

Motplot is a daily crossword without clues. The game serves you one letter at a time and you tap the cell where it belongs, building real words across and down by deduction alone. A 5x5 Mini Mot comes out every day on the web and in the apps, with a 6x6 Max Mot in the apps, free and without ads.

About Motplot

Motplot calls itself a sudoku for words. Each puzzle is a small crossword grid that starts partly filled in, but there are no clues. Instead the game shows the next letter at the top of the screen, and you tap the cell where it belongs. A right tap locks the letter in; a wrong one costs one of four hearts, and the fourth miss ends the puzzle. The makers say every grid is built so that each served letter has exactly one cell it can go in, so the puzzle is solved by reasoning about which words can form, not by guessing.

Every day brings a new Mini Mot (5x5), which plays in the browser at motplot.app, and a new Max Mot (6x6), which the website sends to the iOS and Android apps. A counter under the grid shows how many letters are placed out of the day's total. Puzzles are numbered from the first Motplot on 21 December 2023 and are the same for every player on a given day. After a solve you can share a spoiler-free result grid and keep a streak going.

Motplot is made by Reto Games. Today's puzzles and the last seven days are free in both sizes; an optional subscription in the apps opens the full archive of every Mini and Max Mot published so far. There are no ads, and no account is needed to play.

It suits crossword players who want something other than clue solving, sudoku players who like a puzzle with one forced move at a time, and anyone who enjoys word patterns.

How to play Motplot

  1. Open motplot.app in the browser for today's Mini Mot, or the app for the Mini and the Max Mot.
  2. Look at the letter shown under Next letter at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap the empty cell, marked with a star, where that letter has to go so that the words across and down can still be real words.
  4. A right tap locks the letter in and the next letter is served; a wrong tap costs one of your four hearts.
  5. Keep placing letters until the counter under the grid is full, then share your result grid.

Tips

  • Think about common letter patterns at word starts and ends before placing.
  • Vowels are precious in a small grid: place them where both crossing words need one.
  • If a letter fits two spots, consider which leaves more possible words.
  • Use the app for the larger 6x6 Max Mot once the Mini feels easy.
