Morsle game screen: five empty letter boxes, a Play at 40 WPM button with 21 tries remaining, and a keyboard of letters A to Z with their Morse code

Morsle plays a word in Morse code and asks you to write it down. Letters you get right are marked, and if you need more tries the code is sent again a little slower each time, so the score you share is the words per minute you managed. A practice mode with words or radio callsigns is there between daily games.

About Morsle

Morsle is a daily listening game built around Morse code, made by Rockwell Schrock (callsign WW1X) and brought to you by Remote Ham Radio. Each day it picks one word, the same for everyone, and plays it out loud in Morse. Your job is to copy what you hear and type it in.

The twist is speed. Playback starts at 40 words per minute, which is fast, and you get one guess each time you play the word. You can play it as many times as you like, and every three tries the speed drops by five words per minute, so it gets easier the longer you take. There are up to 21 tries in all, which works out as seven speed steps from 40 down to 10 words per minute. You may submit even with some blanks; correct letters are marked green and there are no other hints. The score you share is the fastest speed at which you managed to copy the word, which is why it appeals to radio operators practising their code.

Between daily puzzles there is a practice mode that drills random words or amateur radio callsigns at a speed you choose. The game runs in the browser with no account and resets at local midnight.

It is free. It suits ham radio operators and anyone learning Morse who wants a short daily ear-training challenge, and it rewards copying faster rather than just getting the word.

How to play Morsle

  1. Set your volume and press play to hear the day's word in Morse code, starting at 40 words per minute.
  2. Type what you copy; you get one guess each time you play the word.
  3. Play it again if you are unsure: every three tries the speed slows by five words per minute.
  4. Correct letters are marked green; you can submit even with blanks, and there are no other hints.
  5. Copy the whole word; your result is the fastest speed at which you got it, up to 21 tries.

Tips

  • Write letters as you hear them rather than waiting for the whole word; Morse rewards copying in real time.
  • If 40 words per minute is too fast, play a few times to let the speed drop before committing a guess.
  • Use practice mode to drill at a comfortable speed, then push faster so the daily feels slower.
  • Listen for common short letters (E, T, A, N) to anchor the word before filling the rest.

Questions

How many tries do I get?

Up to 21. You get one guess each time you play the word, and every three tries the playback slows by five words per minute, from 40 down to 10.

How is my score decided?

By the fastest speed at which you copied the word: the fewer tries you need, the faster the playback was when you got it.

Do I have to know Morse code already?

It helps, but there is a practice mode for words and amateur radio callsigns at a speed you set, so you can build up to the daily.

What do the colours mean?

Correct letters are marked green. There are no other hints, and you can submit a guess even with blank letters.

When does it reset?

At midnight in your own time zone; the game picks the word from your local date.
