LangWhich round 1 of 5 on 22 October 2026: the Gujarati word for elephant on a card, with Bengali, Thai, Chinese, Gujarati and Telugu as answer buttons and 28 seconds left

LangWhich is a quick daily quiz about telling languages apart. Each day one everyday word, such as elephant or fire, is shown in five languages one after another, the same for every player, and you pick which of five languages each version is written in. The whole round lasts 30 seconds, and points come from correct answers plus a time bonus.

About LangWhich

LangWhich asks one question five times: which language is this? Each day the game takes one everyday word, such as elephant, fire, star or mother, and shows it in five different languages, one per round, each in its own script. Under each one you get five languages to choose from. The pool covers 25 widely spoken languages, among them Chinese, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian, Swahili, French and Italian.

The challenge is the same for everyone on a given date and changes at midnight by your own clock. On 22 October 2026 the word was elephant, in Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil, French and Bengali. Because the five rounds share one meaning, the puzzle is less about vocabulary and more about telling scripts and spelling patterns apart: Gujarati from Hindi, Tamil from Telugu, Urdu from Arabic. The daily words follow a fixed list, so neighbouring days often share some of the same versions, and the list comes round again after a year.

You have 30 seconds in all for the five rounds. Each correct answer is worth 15 points and the time you have left adds a bonus of up to 25, for a maximum of 100. You can click the answers or press the number keys 1 to 5. At the end the game shows your score, a button to share it, and your best scores, which are kept only in your browser.

It suits anyone curious about writing systems and world languages, and it is short enough to play over a coffee. There is no account and no ads, and it plays the same on a phone as on a desktop.

Tips

  • All five rounds are the same word, so once you know the meaning, compare the versions you are sure of with the ones you are not.
  • Learn the scripts that look alike: Hindi and Marathi share Devanagari, Gujarati drops the top line, Urdu and Arabic use the same letters with different word forms.
  • Tamil and Telugu are both rounded scripts, but Telugu letters often carry a small tick on top.
  • Answer fast: the seconds you have left are worth up to 25 bonus points.
  • Use the number keys rather than the mouse to save time.
