A Grindstone level in an ice cave: a chain traced through yellow creeps from the hero, 10 of 50 creeps slain, gear slots on the right

Grindstone is a colour-matching puzzle game from Capybara Games: you draw a chain through creeps of one colour to slay them and mine grindstones. Beside a campaign of more than 600 levels, its Daily Grind modes give every player the same seeded run each day and rank the results on leaderboards.

About Grindstone

Grindstone, by Capybara Games, came out on Apple Arcade in 2019 and later reached Switch, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. Grindstone Mountain is overrun with creeps, and your hero, Jorj, climbs it as a day job: each level is a board of colourful creeps, and you slash through them by drawing a chain of one colour. A long enough chain drops a grindstone, which lets the chain switch to another colour, so the puzzle is in planning a route before the creeps get their turn to strike back.

The campaign runs to more than 600 levels with bosses, hazards, blueprints for new gear, a boss-rush mode and a carnival with a wheel of fortune. Updates have kept adding to it since launch.

The daily side is the Daily Grind. Each daily mode starts every player from the same seed: the same creeps, the same hazards and the same rewards. In the Fortune Grind, how big a chain you hit the wheel with decides what you get. The Cosmic Grind, added in a free update in May 2025, is a series of Ooze-filled levels where you pick gear between stages, and your score counts the levels cleared, the health left and how you slay. Each mode has its own leaderboard for the day. A Quick Grind gives an unranked run with random gear when you want more.

It suits players who like match and chain puzzles with some tactics in them, and who want a short score attack each day on top of a long campaign. It is a paid game on Steam, Switch and consoles, and part of the Apple Arcade subscription on iPhone and iPad.

How to play Grindstone

  1. Get Grindstone on Steam, Switch, PlayStation or Xbox, or through Apple Arcade on iPhone and iPad.
  2. Play a few campaign levels to learn chaining: drag from your hero through creeps of one colour to slay them in a line.
  3. Chain enough creeps to drop a grindstone, then pass through it to carry the chain on into another colour.
  4. Open the Daily Grind from the mountain map and choose one of the day's modes.
  5. Clear the day's seeded levels with as much health left as you can and check your rank on that day's leaderboard.

Tips

  • Look at which creeps will attack next before you commit to a chain: ending next to a big group leaves you open.
  • Save grindstones for the long chains that change colour more than once: those score and clear the most.
  • In the Cosmic Grind, choose gear between levels for the next board, and take refills when your gear is low.
  • Play the campaign alongside the dailies: it teaches each creep and hazard the daily boards mix together.

Questions

Is the daily the same for everyone?

Yes. Each Daily Grind mode starts every player from the same seed for the day, with the same creeps, hazards and rewards, and ranks the scores on a leaderboard.

How many daily modes are there?

The Steam store lists three daily modes with leaderboards, and a May 2025 update added the Cosmic Grind as another Daily Grind mode.

Is Grindstone free?

No. It is a paid game on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, and on iPhone and iPad it comes with an Apple Arcade subscription. It has no ads.

What time does the Daily Grind reset?

Once a day. The store pages and the developer's notes do not give the hour.
