Football Grid #97 on Normal: Galatasaray, Juventus and Sporting CP down, Tottenham, Brazil and Played with Ronaldo across, Alex Sandro in one cell

Football Grid is Futbolle's daily football crossover puzzle: six headers around a 3x3 board, and each cell wants a player who fits both its row and its column. Headers can be clubs, nations, managers, team-mates, trophies or traits. You pick Easy, Normal or Hard for the day, then have nine guesses, and each player can be used once.

About Football Grid (Futbolle)

Football Grid is the football version of the Immaculate Grid format, part of the Futbolle family of football puzzles. Each numbered board has three headers along the top and three down the side, generated from the date, so everyone who plays a level on that date gets the same six.

Before the first guess you choose a level, and you cannot switch it during the day. Easy uses big clubs and big football nations, with at least ten answers per cell. Normal adds managers, team-mates and major trophies, so a column can read Brazil or Played with Ronaldo. Hard brings in every trophy and award plus player traits such as goalkeeper or left-footed, with few answers per cell.

You type a player's name into the search box and pick him from the suggestions. You never choose the cell: if the player fits a square, he drops into it by himself with his photo. A miss still spends one of your nine guesses, but you can try the same cell again. Each footballer can be used only once, and your score is the number of cells you filled; at the end each empty cell shows one possible answer.

Every club in a player's senior career counts, loan spells included, while youth teams do not. Club histories come from Wikipedia career tables, about 71,000 footballers are searchable, and before a board goes out every cell is checked to have at least one valid answer. A nation header means the player's football nationality.

The grid rewards knowing transfer routes and careers over decades rather than today's squads. It can be played in English, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian from the flag menu at the top of the page.

How to play Football Grid (Futbolle)

  1. Pick Easy, Normal or Hard for the day; the grid depends on the level and you cannot switch it until tomorrow.
  2. Read the header at the start of a row and the header at the top of a column: each can be a club, a nation, a manager, a team-mate, a trophy or a trait.
  3. Type a footballer's name in the search box and pick him from the suggestions.
  4. If he fits both headers of a cell, he drops into it; if he fits none, the guess is spent and you can try that cell again.
  5. Use each player only once, and fill as many of the nine cells as you can in nine guesses, then copy your result to share it.

Tips

  • Start with the cells that have the fewest answers you can think of.
  • Keep well-travelled players for the cell where nobody else fits.
  • Think of transfer routes over thirty years, not current squads.
  • Loan spells count, so a one-season loan can be the answer.
  • A nation header means the player's football nationality, not a club in that country.

Questions

Do loan spells count?

Yes. Any club in a player's senior career counts, loans included. Youth teams do not.

Can I use the same player twice?

No, each footballer can be used only once per grid.

What do the difficulty levels change?

Easy uses big clubs and big football nations with at least ten answers per cell. Normal adds managers, team-mates and major trophies. Hard adds every trophy and award plus player traits, with few answers per cell. Each level has its own grid, and you cannot switch level during the day.

When is there a new grid?

The site says a new puzzle comes every day at your local midnight.

Can a cell be impossible?

No. Every cell is checked to have at least one valid answer before the board is published.

Which languages can I play Football Grid in?

English, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian. Pick one from the flag menu at the top of the page.

Do I need an account?

No. The daily grid plays with no sign-up, and your statistics are kept on your own device.

Does Football Grid have ads?

The page loads Google's ad script, though no ad showed beside the board when we played.
