Detective Worden is a word-guessing game wrapped in a 1980s detective case. You crack words sent by a mysterious informant using Wordle-style colour feedback, and besides the story there is a Daily Challenge in which everyone tackles the day's puzzle and competes on speed.
About Detective Worden
Detective Worden is a word puzzle game for Windows and macOS, made by Domestic Black Cat and published by Studio Amateur on Steam in October 2025. You play the private detective Raymond Worden at a desk covered in case files, photos, witness records and a green typewriter. Each puzzle is a case log: a hidden English word you type on the typewriter, with seven tries and Wordle's letter colours telling you which letters are in the word and which are in the right place.
There are three modes. Story Mode follows one murder case set in 1985, where the evidence on the desk hints at the word and each solved word opens the next clue. Free Mode lets you set the word length, difficulty, number of tries and a time limit, as many times as you like. The Daily Challenge gives one new puzzle a day that every player gets, and ranks players on logic and speed on the Steam leaderboards.
The typewriter has a blue key that clears the letters you have ruled out and a red key that submits a guess. The game keeps statistics and a history of past answers. Its menus come in ten languages, but the words are English, so it suits players at home in English.
It suits Wordle players who want a desk, a case and a leaderboard around their guesses. Players who expect a full detective game should know the story sits beside the word puzzles rather than driving them.
How to play Detective Worden
- Choose Daily Challenge from the main menu.
- Type a guess on the typewriter and press the red key to submit it.
- Read the colours on the case log: a letter in the right place, a letter in the word but elsewhere, or a letter not in the word.
- Press the blue key to clear letters you have ruled out from the keyboard.
- Find the word within seven tries, as quickly as you can, then see where you stand on the leaderboard.
