The Daily Mirror's cryptic crossword, an 11 by 11 grid of wordplay clues each day.

on games.mirror.co.uk

The Daily Mirror Cryptic Crossword for 26 October: an empty 11 by 11 grid with its across and down cryptic clues beside it, a timer and three Jokers

The Daily Mirror Cryptic Crossword is a free 11 by 11 cryptic grid that changes every day, the same for every reader. Each clue hides a definition inside a piece of wordplay, and three Jokers per puzzle reveal a letter when you are stuck. A date bar lets you go back and play earlier days.

About Daily Mirror Cryptic Crossword

The Daily Mirror Cryptic Crossword runs on games.mirror.co.uk, the Mirror's games site, in the same crossword player as its main, quick and quiz crosswords. The player is built by kr3m, who also make the Daily Express puzzles. A fresh grid arrives every day, Sunday too, and everyone who opens it on that date gets the same clues.

The grid is 11 by 11 with about 25 clues, most of them short. Today's mixed answers of three to seven letters with an eleven-letter word and a three-word phrase. Each clue joins a plain definition at one end with wordplay at the other: anagrams, hidden words, sounds, reversals and abbreviations. The clue list sits beside the grid on a desktop. On a phone the grid fills the top of the screen, the current clue shows in a bar, and the game's own keyboard sits underneath.

A timer runs from the start and cannot be paused, and the site gives points for a fast, accurate solve. You get three Jokers per puzzle, each revealing one letter, and watching a short advert earns more. The date shows how much of the grid you have filled as a percentage. The arrows beside it open earlier days.

It is a lighter cryptic than the big broadsheet grids, so it suits solvers learning the conventions or anyone wanting a short cryptic with a coffee. The page carries display ads, and a video advert usually plays before the grid opens.

How to play Daily Mirror Cryptic Crossword

  1. Open the Cryptic Crossword on games.mirror.co.uk and press Play Now. Skip or wait out the video advert that usually plays first.
  2. Pick a clue in the list or tap a square. The selected answer lights up in blue, and its clue shows in the bar under the grid.
  3. Find the definition at the start or end of the clue. Then work the rest of the clue as wordplay that builds the same answer.
  4. Type the answer. On a phone, use the game's own keyboard below the grid.
  5. Use the crossing letters to check answers and break into harder clues. Spend a Joker to reveal a letter when you are stuck.
  6. Press the left arrow beside the date to play an earlier day's grid.

Tips

  • Many answers are only three or four letters long. Solve those first to get letters into the long ones.
  • Words like about, around or returned often mean the answer is built round something or written backwards.
  • Keep your three Jokers for the last clue or two. The timer keeps running while you think, so a Joker can save points late on.
  • Switch between Enter vertically and across with the button under the grid when typing a down answer.
