Daily 5 Trivia board: question 5 of a 1990s Movies quiz, about the studio behind Princess Mononoke, with four answer buttons and a countdown timer at 11.5 seconds

Daily 5 Trivia is an iPhone and Android quiz with one set of five multiple-choice questions a day, written by people and set in a past decade that changes each week. Everyone plays the same quiz once, faster correct answers score more, and the results go on a world leaderboard with country codes. There are no ads.

About Daily 5 Trivia - Retro Quiz

Daily 5 Trivia, subtitled Retro Quiz, is a small app by Matthew Garvin of 1button.app, a Canadian maker of a few simple apps. It came out on the App Store in November 2025 and is also on Google Play. Its listing calls it the Wordle of trivia: one short quiz a day, done in a minute or two.

Every midnight a new quiz of five questions goes live, the same for everyone. Each week is set in one decade, from the 1960s to the 2010s, with the 1990s coming up most often, and each quiz has its own subject within it, such as 1990s Movies. Subjects shown in the store include sport, music, film, TV and pop culture.

A question gives you four answers and a countdown. Only correct answers score, and the faster you tap the right one, the more points it is worth, so the day's total sits somewhere in the tens of thousands. After the fifth question the app tallies your score, shows your place in the world, and lets you open the leaderboard, where players are listed by initials and country, or read through the correct answers.

The questions are written by people, many of them players who offered to contribute, and the app is firm that none of it is generated. Some quizzes come with a longer note on one of the answers, which the app calls a Rabbit Hole, such as a piece on Bernie Madoff's dot-matrix printer. A recent update added a casual mode beside the ranked daily.

There are no ads and no tracking, and the app is free. It suits people who grew up with the decades it covers and like a quick daily round with a ranking, though the multiple-choice format gives anyone a fair chance.

How to play Daily 5 Trivia - Retro Quiz

  1. Open the app after midnight to find the day's quiz and see which decade and subject it covers.
  2. Tap Start to begin; the first question appears with its countdown running.
  3. Pick one of the four answers as quickly as you can: faster correct answers score more, and wrong ones score nothing.
  4. After the fifth question, see your score and your place in the world ranking.
  5. Open the leaderboard or the answers screen, and read any Rabbit Hole note that comes with the quiz.

Tips

  • Read the decade and subject on the start screen before you tap Start, so you are thinking of the right era.
  • Answer at once when you are sure: the points fall with every second the countdown runs.
  • When you are not sure, rule out the answers that do not fit the decade; one of the four is often from the wrong era.
  • Go through the answers screen afterwards, since a decade comes back on other weeks.
