Sort seven words into a three-circle Venn diagram, overlaps included.

Today's Common Three board: an empty yellow, red and blue three-circle Venn diagram above a word bank of Lift, Tow, Fire, Pull, Pick Up, Rise and Hoist, with five mistake ticks

Common Three is a free daily word-grouping puzzle on Ponder Club. Seven words go into a Venn diagram of three overlapping circles: some belong to one theme, others sit where two or all three overlap. You have five mistakes to spare, and a new puzzle comes out each day at midnight Pacific Time.

About Common Three (Ponder Club)

Common Three is one of the thirteen free daily games on Ponder Club, made by Calli and Eden at Flying Comet Games. Where Connections sorts words into flat groups, Common Three uses a Venn diagram: three coloured circles, yellow, red and blue, overlapping in the middle, with seven words or short phrases in a bank below.

On the board we played the circles carried no labels at the start, so the first job is to see what the words have in common. One day's bank read Lift, Tow, Fire, Pull, Pick Up, Rise and Hoist, all of which can mean raising or moving something, and the puzzle is to split them by finer senses. A word may fit one theme, two of them, or all three, and putting it in the right overlap is where the real deduction lies. You drag a word onto the diagram, or tap the word and then tap a region, and press Check. Five ticks at the top count the mistakes you have left.

Each puzzle is credited to a contributor from the Ponder Club community, whose name shows above the diagram. There is one puzzle a day for everyone, with a leaderboard, a comments thread for each day and a free archive of past puzzles. No account is needed to play. The site shows ads, and a one-time purchase removes them across Ponder Club.

It suits players who like Connections-style categories but want a shorter puzzle with more logic in where each word goes.

How to play Common Three (Ponder Club)

  1. Open today's puzzle and close the short how-to cards.
  2. Read the seven words in the bank and look for the three themes they share.
  3. Drag a word onto the diagram, or tap the word and then tap the region it belongs in.
  4. Put a word that fits two themes in their overlap, and one that fits all three in the centre.
  5. Press Check when you are ready; each wrong placement uses one of your five ticks.
  6. When the diagram is solved, share your result, see the leaderboard or play past days in the archive.

Tips

  • Place the words that fit only one theme first; they are usually the easiest to be sure of.
  • For each remaining word, ask of every theme separately whether it fits, then combine the answers.
  • The centre is the hardest spot, so test candidates against all three themes before dropping them there.
  • Think about less common meanings of a word; that is often how it sneaks into an overlap.
