Today's Colorecall Duo daily, round 1 of 4: a red DEV logo and a lilac diamond badge shown side by side to memorise, with the countdown at 2

Colorecall is a colour memory game. Each round shows you coloured shapes for five seconds; then one comes back without its colour and you rebuild it with hue, saturation and brightness sliders. Four modes each have a daily set of four rounds, the same for everyone, with a leaderboard to compare scores.

About Colorecall

Colorecall tests how well you remember a shade, not a colour name. In its main mode, Duo, two shapes appear side by side in two colours for five seconds. One of them comes back in a plain colour and you set its original shade with hue, saturation and brightness sliders, then lock it in. Holding two colours at once is the hard part, since they blur together in memory. The shapes are often familiar marks, such as a card logo or a letter, so the shape will not remind you of the right colour.

Each mode has a daily of four rounds with the same colours for every player, and each round scores up to 25 points, so a day's set is out of 100. The score compares your colour with the original in CIELAB, a colour space built to match human vision, so it reflects how different the two colours look rather than how far apart the numbers are. After each round the shown colour and yours appear side by side with their values, and a leaderboard ranks the day's players. Your name on it is optional.

Besides Duo there are three other dailies. Classic shows one shape at a time, and you pick the shape back and rebuild its colour. Flag shows a flag with one area painted the wrong colour, and you slide it back to the real shade. Football Logo does the same with club badges from the Premier League, Real Madrid, MLS and more. Quick Play gives new colours every time for practice.

The daily set turns over every 18 hours in the site's code rather than at a fixed hour, so the reset time moves from day to day. It is free in the browser on a phone or a computer, with no download, no sign-up and no ads seen on the page. It suits players of colour games such as Dialed or Hueman who want a test of memory as well as eye.

How to play Colorecall

  1. Open Colorecall, pick a mode (Duo, Classic, Flag or Football Logo) and press Play daily.
  2. Watch the coloured shapes for five seconds and remember which colour belongs to which.
  3. When a shape comes back without its true colour, set the hue, saturation and brightness sliders to rebuild it.
  4. Press Lock it in to see the shown colour beside yours and your score out of 25.
  5. Play all four rounds, then check the day's leaderboard and your total out of 100.

Tips

  • Name the colour to yourself with a detail: not just purple, but a dusty, mid-dark purple.
  • Watch brightness and saturation as well as hue; memory drifts toward bright, typical colours.
  • In Duo, look at both shapes during the five seconds, since you do not know which will return.
  • Set hue first, then brightness, then saturation.
  • In Flag and Football Logo, the rest of the flag or badge stays in its true colours, so use them as a reference for brightness.

Questions

Is the daily the same for everyone?

Yes. Each mode's daily uses the same colours for every player, so scores can be compared on the leaderboard.

How is it scored?

Your colour is compared with the original in CIELAB, a colour space designed to match human vision. Each of the four rounds is worth up to 25 points, 100 in all.

When does a new daily come out?

The site's code starts a new daily set every 18 hours, counted from midnight UTC on 1 January 2024, so the reset hour changes from day to day.

How many dailies are there?

Four: Duo, Classic, Flag and Football Logo, each with four rounds. Quick Play adds unlimited practice.

Is it free?

Yes. It plays in the browser with no download or sign-up, and we saw no ads.
