Word Roundup is a daily puzzle by David L. Hoyt, syndicated by Andrews McMeel Universal: a word search in which, instead of a list, you get crossword-style clues to the hidden words. It runs in USA Today and is played on GoComics Puzzles with a subscription.
About Word Roundup
Word Roundup is David L. Hoyt's mash-up of two classic puzzles, distributed by Andrews McMeel Universal. Its syndicate describes it as combining the challenge of a crossword with the quick-solve satisfaction of a word search, and it appears in the USA Today newspaper as well as on GoComics, where it is one of the Puzzle Society games.
The grid looks like any word search, with words hidden across, down and diagonally, some backwards. The difference is that you are not told what they are. Each hidden word has a crossword-style clue, and you work out the answer first, then find it in the grid. In the game's art, the circled answers include VENUS, CLIFF, MAUVE, GREEN and SKIFF.
The grid helps with the clues as much as the clues help with the grid: a word you cannot think of may jump out when you scan for its first letter, and the clue confirms it. It suits players who find a plain word search too easy and a full crossword too long.
Word Roundup came to GoComics when the Puzzle Society closed and moved its 34 games there, each with a new level every day and its full archive. It is included with a GoComics Premium subscription ($4.99 a month or $34.99 a year at the move), which is ad-free.
