Who? roughly. share art: the line Who, roughly, thinks that? beside a phone showing puzzle 252, Giving a secondhand gift?, with the answer choices Acceptable, Unacceptable and Not sure

Who? roughly. takes five questions from published opinion polls each day, such as whether people always wash their hands before eating. You give your own answer, then guess what percentage of the people surveyed said a given option, and see how many points you were off.

About Who? roughly.

Who? is one of the daily guessing games from roughly., a small site where every game asks for an estimate rather than an exact answer. In this one the number is a share of people: out of everyone a pollster asked, how many gave a certain answer?

Each day brings five questions, the same for every player, taken word for word from published surveys, most of them by YouGov, with others from Gallup, Pew Research Center and gfs.bern. A round has three steps. First you answer the question yourself. Then the game names one answer option and asks how many of the people surveyed chose it; you set a percentage on a field of dots or type it. Then the real result appears, along with who was asked, when, how many people and by which institute, and a sentence on how you could have reasoned your way to the number.

The score is the gap in percentage points between your guess and the real share, and the day's result is your average gap, so lower is better. A guess inside the survey's own margin of error counts as a bull's eye. New questions arrive at midnight UTC. Today's rounds are free and need no account; past days need the paid roughly+ tier. You can share your five or open a room and play with friends, in English or German.

How to play Who? roughly.

  1. Read the survey question and give your own answer.
  2. Guess what percentage of the people surveyed chose the named answer, by setting the dots or typing the number.
  3. Lock it in to see the real share, who was asked and when.
  4. Read how you could have worked it out, then go on to the next question.
  5. After five questions, share your average gap.

Tips

  • Check who was asked: a poll of British adults and one of Swiss voters can answer very differently.
  • Watch the exact wording of the option you are guessing; a strong option like always tends to get fewer votes than a softer one.
  • Your own answer is not a guide to everyone else's; think about the whole population surveyed.
