WhereSpoken's puzzle for 10/18/26 after one wrong guess: the audio sample player, the guess box with 1 of 6 guesses used, and the first hint, an English translation of the recording

WhereSpoken plays you a short recording of a sentence and asks which language it is and which country the speaker is from. You have six guesses, and each wrong one reveals a hint, from a translation of the text to clues about the country and the language family. A new recording comes every day, free and without ads or an account.

About WhereSpoken

WhereSpoken is a daily listening game by Jakob Neumann, who makes the Polarcade browser games on his own. Its first puzzle went out in January 2026, and each day's puzzle is numbered and dated, the same for every player.

The puzzle is one audio sample: a few sentences read aloud in a language. The text is ordinary, about things like an old tree or a market, and holds no deliberate clues, so you go by the sound. Play it as often as you like, at normal speed or slowed to three quarters. Your guesses name a language as spoken in a country (Swahili in Kenya or Swahili in Tanzania, for example), picked from a list that appears as you type.

You have six guesses. Each wrong one reveals the next hint: first an English translation of what was said, then clues such as a fact about the speaker's country. In Normal mode the game also shows how close your guess is in the language family tree, and country hints; Hard and Extreme give fewer hints, Extreme none at all. The mode is set before your first guess and then locked for the day.

Today's puzzle is free with no account and no ads. A yearly Polarcade Pass, which keeps the games ad-free, opens every past puzzle, syncs your progress across devices and adds an interactive language map and a language family tree to explore. Stats and badges come with the free game. The screens can be switched between English, German, Swedish and Spanish.

It suits people who like languages, travellers and anyone who enjoys a listening puzzle that teaches a little about where languages are spoken.

How to play WhereSpoken

  1. Open WhereSpoken and choose a mode: Normal shows the most hints, Hard fewer, Extreme none.
  2. Play today's audio sample, as often as you like, slowed to 0.75x if it helps.
  3. Start typing a language and pick the language and country pair you think it is from the list.
  4. Press Guess. A wrong guess reveals the next hint, starting with a translation of the text.
  5. Use the hints and the family-tree feedback to narrow it down, and find the language and country within six guesses.

Tips

  • Listen for tones, nasal vowels, clicks or rolled consonants to place the language family first.
  • Use the slower speed to pick out single words or names.
  • In Normal mode, read the ancestry feedback after each guess: a guess in the right branch tells you more than a far one.
  • Pick a mode before your first guess; it locks once you start.
