WhatTheMovie: Today's Challenge

WhatTheMovie has been a community site for guessing films from single screenshots since 2008, with hundreds of thousands of stills uploaded by its members. Its Today's Challenge turns that into a daily game: one still from the archive, the same for every player, numbered and dated, with a fresh board at midnight UTC.

You have six guesses at the film, which may be a movie or a series, and you can type the title in many languages. The format rotates through the week: a zoom that widens with each miss, a curtain that opens sideways or downward, a new still from the same film after every miss, a line drawing that comes into focus, a wall that loses bricks, a board of several stills at once, or the film's character portraits. A badge above the board names the day's format.

Each miss except the last also unlocks a clue, in order: the year, the language, the director, the lead actor and then the title's initials. After a wrong guess the game also says how your film compares with the answer, such as the same decade, a shared genre or the same director. Yesterday's answer is shown below the board, and with a free account your streak is kept.

It suits film fans who know their way around older and international cinema as well as recent hits.
