WHAT THE GOLF? gameplay: the golfer flies through the air on a cliff course while the club and ball are left near the flag

WHAT THE GOLF? is a comedy physics game by Triband that starts from golf and then throws it away, sending toasters and horses towards the hole. Its Daily Courses mode brings new levels each day, some themed to the weekday, with a leaderboard for the fewest shots.

About WHAT THE GOLF?

WHAT THE GOLF? is by the Danish studio Triband. It came out on Apple Arcade in September 2019 and on Steam in October 2020 for Windows, Mac and Linux. It later reached Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. It is also sold on the Epic Games Store and GOG. It is a comedy game of puzzles and surprises made, in its own words, for people who hate golf by people with no respect for the game. Hundreds of levels with names like Sporty Sports! and A Hole New World send toasters and office chairs flying.

Most levels begin with a familiar idea (hit the thing into the hole) and then twist it: the ball might become something else, or the level might turn into a parody of another game. Working out what each level wants is half the fun.

In 2022 the DAYlicious update added daily courses. Each day brings new courses to play, some tied to the day of the week, such as Traffic Tuesday or Movies Saturday, and you can come back daily to win small prizes. Reviews describe the daily challenge as a series of courses to finish in as few putts as possible, with scores on a worldwide leaderboard, and achievements reward playing the daily on many different days.

There is also a level editor and screen sharing through Steam Remote Play Together. It suits anyone who wants a quick laugh each day, golf fan or not.

On Steam it is a one-time purchase with no ads. On Apple devices it comes with an Apple Arcade subscription. The game can be played in seventeen languages, Japanese and Thai among them.

How to play WHAT THE GOLF?

  1. Buy and install WHAT THE GOLF? on Steam.
  2. Open the daily courses from the menu.
  3. Work out what each silly level wants, then aim and shoot to reach the goal.
  4. Finish in as few shots as you can and check the leaderboard.

Tips

  • Come back on different days to see all the weekday themes.
