Whale-a-day Vigil 170 on desktop: a circle of ten player seats around the Witness beside the Chronicle of night one and day one claims, with October pumpkins

Whale-a-day is a free daily deduction puzzle built on Blood on the Clocktower. A town played a game and nobody survived. You read what everyone claimed and what happened each night and day, ask the Witness to check a few statements, and name every player's true role within five attempts.

About Whale-a-day

Whale-a-day sets one vigil a day, numbered from the first on 12 May 2026, at a table of eight to thirteen players. The Chronicle tells the game night by night and day by day: who claimed which role, what their ability told them, who was executed and who was found dead at dawn. The Circle shows the same game as seats around a table, with a moon or sun badge on each seat that died and when.

You play a traveller who arrived too late. Above the town hangs the Witness, an eye that saw everything and will say whether a statement was true or false. It answers only a few times per round: six at today's ten-player table, five at a table of eight. A false answer does not make a player evil. Poison, the Drunk, a Recluse or a Spy can all turn honest words false, and working out which is the puzzle.

Tap a seat to see its claim and its lines, then pick a role from the script's list or press Match claim. When every seat has a verdict you submit an attempt. Seats you got right lock in place, the reveals refill, and you have five attempts in all. The header gives the usual count of Townsfolk, Outsiders, Minions and Demons for the table, which roles such as the Baron can change.

The game is made by furtler and keeps growing. The hundredth vigil brought an archive of past puzzles and nine new roles, and some days carry a titled puzzle written by a community author. Newcomers get a guided game and five short lessons on Trouble Brewing roles that end at a full twelve-player table. After the daily, the result screen offers practice puzzles. In October the page dresses up with a moon, bats and pumpkins.

It suits Blood on the Clocktower players who want a solo puzzle between games, and fans of Clues by Sam style logic who like a story behind the clues.

How to play Whale-a-day

  1. Press Begin to open today's vigil. Your time starts then.
  2. Read the Chronicle of the town's nights and days, or switch to the Circle to see the same game as seats.
  3. Spend the Witness's reveals on the statements that would settle the most. Each reveal says only whether those words were true or false.
  4. Tap each seat and choose the role you think it held, or press Match claim if you believe its claim.
  5. Submit your attempt when every seat has a role. Correct seats lock, the reveals refill, and you get five attempts in all.

Tips

  • Start from the role counts in the header. They limit how many evil players there can be, unless a Baron or similar role changes them.
  • Deaths and executions cannot be faked. Check who was still alive to speak before trusting what they said.
  • A true reading proves who gave it. Spend an early reveal on a strong reader such as a Fortune Teller or an Empath.
  • The Fortune Teller has a red herring that reads as the Demon all game. Only a true no clears both seats.

Questions

Do I need to know Blood on the Clocktower?

It helps, but a guided game and five short lessons teach the rules one idea at a time, using the Trouble Brewing roles.

What is the Witness?

An all-seeing eye that tells you whether a statement was true or false. It answers a few times per round, five at a table of eight and more at bigger tables, and the count refills after each attempt.

When does a new vigil come out?

Every day at midnight UTC, the same puzzle for everyone.

Can I play past vigils?

Yes. The calendar opens the archive, 132 past puzzles on 28 October 2026. They do not count towards your streak or stats.
