Upwordly is a Puzzle Society word scramble in which the words grow: six answers, each with more letters than the one before, unscrambled with the help of crossword-style clues. Finish all six without a mistake and a 30-second bonus round follows. It comes with a GoComics subscription, with a new puzzle each day.

About Upwordly

Upwordly is one of the Puzzle Society's own games from Andrews McMeel Universal, played on the GoComics puzzle pages. Its designer, Abigail McNaghten, writes that the puzzle editor David Steinberg came up with the idea for a new word scramble in 2023, and she designed the game with him and the Puzzle Society's team.

A day's puzzle has six levels. Each gives you a crossword-style clue and a set of round letter tiles to unscramble into the answer, and the number of letters goes up with each level, so the first words are short and the last ones take real work. In the game's art the tiles are laid out in growing rows: N H, K A, T R I G, A H E S.

If you get through all six levels with no mistakes, you reach a bonus round: 30 seconds to make as many words as you can from the letters for extra points. That gives a reason to be careful in the main levels rather than guessing.

Upwordly is included with a GoComics subscription. It suits fans of Jumble and of clued anagram puzzles.

How to play Upwordly

Open Upwordly on the GoComics puzzles page and sign in with a GoComics subscription.
Read the clue for the first level and look at its scrambled letters.
Tap the letters in order to spell the answer.
Go on through all six levels; each word is longer than the last.
Finish all six with no mistakes to play the 30-second bonus round of making as many words as you can.

Tips

Read the clue before the letters: it often names the word outright once you see it.
Look for common endings in the longer words, such as -ING, -ED or -ER.
Take your time in the main levels: one mistake costs you the bonus round.
