Unzoomed is a daily map puzzle by Benjamin Td. Each day you see a satellite map of a city somewhere in the world, with no labels, and you have six guesses to name it. Miss, and the map pulls back. Every wrong guess shows more of the area and marks your guess red if it is over 1,000 km away or yellow if it is closer. Free access ended on 1 December 2025. Play now needs a Google sign-in and a paid subscription, with no ads.
About Unzoomed
Unzoomed gives you one city a day to identify from above. The game opens on a close satellite view with no place names. You can pan and zoom within the view the way you would on an online map, to look at a building, a street pattern or a stretch of coast.
You have six guesses. After each wrong one, the map unzooms: it pulls back to show more of the surrounding area, and the game tells you how far your guess was from the right place. So the puzzle starts hard, with a few blocks of rooftops, and gets easier as the river, the shoreline or the shape of the city comes into view.
The clues are whatever a satellite sees: the grid or tangle of the streets, roof colours and building materials, trees and parks, water, and which way the shadows fall. The answers come from cities all over the world, not just capitals; the game's list of places includes L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl.
Unzoomed was made by Benjamin Td and launched in early 2024. The site is available in English, German, Spanish and French. A USA edition with American cities only sits beside the world game.
An account is now needed to play. The game page opens on a sign-in box, and the day's city loads only after you sign in with Google and subscribe. Free access ended on 1 December 2025, after the maker said ads did not cover the cost of the map provider. The game is now for paying subscribers only, with no ads, and the price is shown only at the Stripe checkout.
How to play Unzoomed
- Sign in with a Google account and subscribe, since the day's city does not load without both.
- Look over the satellite map and pan or zoom to study the streets, coast and buildings.
- Type the name of a city as your guess.
- A red mark means your guess is more than 1,000 km away. A yellow mark means it is within 1,000 km.
- After a wrong guess the map unzooms to show more of the area. Find the city within six guesses.
Tips
- Look at shadows to work out north and south, and roughly how far from the equator you are.
- Street layout says a lot: a strict grid, a medieval tangle or a planned capital.
- Use the distance from your wrong guesses to narrow down the region.
