Three clued word puzzles a day: place the tiles to spell two crossing words.

Today's first TIRDS puzzle, clue Sound right: a five by five grid with two crossing runs of empty cells and the tiles G, N, I, E, R, T and U to place, hint button showing six

TIRDS (tiles plus words) gives you three small word puzzles each day. Each clue points to a two-word phrase, and you place a handful of letter tiles into a little grid so the two words cross. Up to six free letters help across the trio, and a timer, a leaderboard and a share card round off the day.

About TIRDS

TIRDS, short for tiles plus words, is a free daily word game, still marked as a beta. Each day brings a numbered trio of three small puzzles, the Daily Tird, that every player gets on the same date.

Every puzzle has a short, playful clue such as "Sound right" or "Cheerful pirate". The answer is a two-word phrase, and the two words cross each other on a five by five grid: "Sound right" is RING and TRUE, sharing the R. Below the grid sit exactly the letters you need, and you tap them into place one by one. A filled pair turns green and the game shows the phrase, your time and how many hints you used. A player quoted on the site calls it a mix of a riddle, a crossword and multiple anagrams.

You have six free letters shared across the three puzzles, each revealing one tile, plus undo and shuffle buttons. A timer runs while you play. When the trio is done you get a result to copy or share, a place on the day's leaderboard, and friend codes to follow people you know. A new trio arrives at your local midnight, and a countdown shows the time left. Infinite Tirds offers more puzzles once the daily set is done.

It suits players who like cryptic-flavoured clues and anagrams and want a short daily set rather than one long grid. It plays in the browser on a phone or a computer, with no sign-up and no ads.

How to play TIRDS

  1. Open the Daily Tird and press Start to see the first of the day's three puzzles.
  2. Read the clue and think of a two-word phrase it could mean.
  3. Look at the grid: the highlighted cells show where the two words run and where they cross.
  4. Tap the letter tiles in order to fill the cells; use undo or shuffle as you go.
  5. Use a free letter if you are stuck; six are shared across the trio.
  6. When the pair is right it turns green; press Next puzzle and finish all three.

Tips

  • Treat the clue as a riddle: it describes the phrase as a whole, often sideways.
  • Count the cells in each run to fix the length of both words before you place a tile.
  • The crossing cell holds a letter both words share, so try the rarer tiles there first.
  • Save your six free letters for the third puzzle, which can be the hardest.
