Seldom board for the prompt starting with 'top': answers Soil scored 62 Common and Iary 12 Very rare, the Obvious to Seldom meter and a fun fact

Seldom gives you one prompt a day and asks for five answers. Each answer scores how many out of 100 people would find it obvious, and lower is better. Find a valid answer almost nobody would think of and it scores zero, which the game calls a Seldom.

About Seldom

Seldom is a daily browser trivia game where a rare answer beats a correct but obvious one. Each day there is one open prompt, for example "Name a type of lizard" or "Name a word or two-word phrase that starts with 'top'". You give five different answers, and the fewer people who would think of each one, the better you do.

Scores are framed as 100 people from English-speaking countries: an answer scores how many of them would say "oh yes, obviously". Apple for "Name a fruit" scores near 100, while rambutan scores zero. A zero is called a Seldom, and five of them make a perfect 0 out of 500. What counts is where an answer is known, not where it comes from, so everyday local words and snacks tend to score low.

After each guess the game shows its score on a meter running from Obvious 100 to Seldom 0, with a label such as Common or Very rare and a short fun fact about the answer. Two hints a puzzle show part of an answer, at a cost to its score. The total gets a grade from Keep going to Legendary.

The prompt is the same for everyone and changes at midnight UTC. Seldom launched in April 2026, and a Puzzle Archive lists every past puzzle by date and number; catching up on one counts toward your streak. No account is needed for the daily, though signing in keeps stats across devices and shows a weekly ranking.

It suits players who like list and category games but would rather think sideways than recall facts.

How to play Seldom

  1. Read the day's prompt, such as "Name a type of lizard".
  2. Type an answer you think few people would give and press Go.
  3. See its score out of 100 on the meter, with a label and a fun fact.
  4. Give five different valid answers in total, keeping each score as low as you can.
  5. Use one of the two hints if stuck, knowing a revealed answer scores higher.
  6. Aim for zeros, each one a Seldom, and a low total out of 500.

Tips

  • Obvious answers score near 100, so skip the first thing that comes to mind.
  • Answers that are everyday where you live but unknown elsewhere score low, since most of the 100 people have never heard of them.
  • Keep answers clearly valid for the prompt: a rare answer only counts if it actually fits.
  • Go specific: a rare breed, species or brand usually scores far lower than the best-known example.

Questions

When does Seldom reset?

A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight UTC, the same for every player.

How is my score worked out?

Each answer scores how many of 100 people would find it obvious. Lower is better, a zero is a Seldom, and your total is out of 500.

Can I play past puzzles?

Yes. The Puzzle Archive lists past puzzles by date and number, and playing one counts toward your streak. Some older ones may ask for a free account.

Do I need an account?

No. The daily plays in the browser without signing up. Signing in with Google or email saves stats across devices and shows a weekly ranking.
