Sampledle puzzle #123: the board with a record carrying a Drums sample sticker, its waveform and play bar, sample 1 of 2 and the clue panel with five attempt lights

Sampledle is a daily music puzzle about sampling. You hear a snippet of an older record, tagged as drums, vocals, bassline, melody or a full loop, and name the well-known song that sampled it. Each skip or wrong guess opens a clue, from the genre and year to the artist and the cover, and may unlock another sample, over five attempts.

About Sampledle

Sampledle is built for crate diggers, producers and hip hop fans. Rather than playing the song you have to name, it plays the record that song borrowed from: a soul loop, a jazz break, a disco hook or a drum pattern. Your job is to recognise which hit flipped it.

Each day there is one numbered puzzle for everyone. A sticker on the spinning record says what kind of sample you are hearing (drums, vocals, bassline, melody or a full loop), and the info panel shows from the start how many Spotify plays and YouTube views the hit has. You get five attempts. A skip or a wrong guess does not lengthen the clip as in Heardle; it opens a clue instead, in order the genre, the year, the artist and the cover art, and some days it unlocks a second sample from the same hit.

When you finish you see the day's global results, the answer with links to listen to the hit and its sources, and a share text with your attempts. Your stats and streak are kept in the browser, and the archive lets you go back and play earlier days.

The audio is played through SoundCloud and the game is free, with Google ads on the page. It rewards people who listen to where songs come from: if you have ever looked up what a beat was built on, you will have a head start.

How to play Sampledle

  1. Press Start Digging on the how-to card, then tap the play button to hear today's sample; the sticker tells you whether it is drums, vocals, a bassline, a melody or a full loop.
  2. Type the title of the famous track you think sampled it and pick it from the list.
  3. A skip or a wrong guess reveals the next clue (genre, then year, then artist, then the cover) and may unlock another sample.
  4. Name the hit within five attempts, then share your result or open the archive to play a past day.

Tips

  • The Spotify and YouTube counts shown at the start tell you how big the hit is: tens of millions of plays points to a well-known single.
  • Think about who samples that kind of record: chopped soul points to some producers, disco loops to others.
  • Use the year clue to place the song in an era of hip hop or pop before guessing.
  • A skip and a wrong guess cost the same, so guess whenever you have a real candidate.
  • Play the archive to learn common sample sources; the same classic records turn up in many hits.
