Past Puzzle on the web: a first guess of 1900 with the 1 in green and 9, 0, 0 in red, and the second clue about Eadweard Muybridge's horse photographs above the number pad

Past Puzzle is a daily history riddle in German and English. Each day you read a historical event and type the year it belongs to; each digit is coloured to show what is right, and a new event from the same year appears after every miss. You have four tries, and the daily is free with no ads.

About Past Puzzle

Past Puzzle is a daily guess-the-year game by Tom Seidel (ostbits) from Germany, playable in German and English on the web and in apps for iPhone and Android. Each puzzle is built around one year, the same for every player that day.

You start with one historical event, written out in a sentence or two, and type a four-digit year on the number pad. Each digit of your guess is then coloured: green for a digit in the right place, and other colours for digits that are wrong, so you narrow the year down digit by digit. After each miss a new event from the same year appears. There are four clues and four guesses.

When the round ends, the game shows how many days you solved on the first, second, third and fourth try, offers a result to share, and lists every clue with a historical picture and a link to read more, so a puzzle also works as a short history lesson.

The daily puzzle is free, needs no account and has no ads. An optional supporter subscription lets you play missed puzzles, play more than one puzzle a day and explore past events in an archive, and adds a supporter badge to shared results.

It suits players of Yearbook, Yeardle and Jaardle, and German speakers looking for a daily history puzzle in their own language.

How to play Past Puzzle

  1. Open pastpuzzle.de or the app and press Start for the puzzle of the day.
  2. Read the first historical event.
  3. Type the year you think it happened on the number pad and confirm with the tick.
  4. Read the colours on each digit: green digits are right and in place.
  5. Read the next event from the same year and guess again, up to four times.
  6. Open the list of all hints and links to read about the year, and share your result.

Tips

  • Read the colours digit by digit: once the first two digits are green, only the decade and the year are left.
  • Later clues are usually easier to place, so a rough first guess costs little.
  • Follow the reading link after a puzzle: the same eras come up again.
