on merriam-webster.com

An Octordle game in play on a dark board: ARISE and DOUBT entered on four visible grids with green and yellow tiles, 11 guesses left, and a keyboard with board keys 1 to 8

Octordle stretches the Wordle idea across eight boards. Every guess you type is entered on all eight grids, and you have thirteen guesses to solve every word. A new puzzle comes out each day, with extra modes and unlimited play alongside it.

About Octordle

Octordle is the largest of the well-known multi-board Wordle games. It was made by Kenneth Crawford and is now hosted on Merriam-Webster's games site next to Quordle; the old octordle.com address sends you there.

The rules are Wordle's, multiplied. You type a five-letter word and it goes onto eight grids at once. Each grid colours the letters for its own answer: green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter that belongs elsewhere in the word, grey for one that is not in it. You have thirteen guesses for all eight words, which leaves little room for guesses that only help one board.

A game of Octordle feels more like managing a spreadsheet than solving a single puzzle. Early guesses are about spreading letters across as many boards as possible, and the second half is a race to close out boards in the right order before the guesses run out. Alongside the daily classic, the site offers Sequence, where the next board only opens when you solve the current one, and Rescue, where some guesses are already filled in for you, plus free play versions of these for unlimited rounds.

It suits players who have outgrown Wordle and Quordle and want a longer daily session. A full game takes noticeably more time than either, and failing one board while solving the other seven is common.

How to play Octordle

  1. Type a five-letter word and press Enter; it is entered on all eight boards.
  2. Read the colours on each board: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in the word elsewhere, grey is not in that word.
  3. Pick your next word using what the boards tell you, trying to help several at once.
  4. Once a board's word is fully green it is solved and stops taking guesses.
  5. Solve all eight words within thirteen guesses to complete the puzzle.

Tips

  • Use your first three or four guesses on words with no repeated letters to cover as much of the alphabet as you can.
  • Solve boards that are nearly done as you go; each solved board makes the next guess count on fewer grids.
  • Look for a guess that fits one board exactly and also tests letters on another.
  • Click a single board to focus on it when the full view gets crowded.
  • Keep at least one guess per remaining board in reserve near the end.
