Movie Timeliner Daily #32 on a desktop: four films placed in order on the timeline, 1971 to 2022, each marked right, with The Last Airbender as the next card

Movie Timeliner is a daily film game: each day gives every player the same eight movies to put in the order they were released. One film starts on the timeline with its year, and you drag the rest into place one poster at a time. It comes from Steady Koalas, who also make Music Timeliner.

About Movie Timeliner

Movie Timeliner is a free browser game from Steady Koalas, who also make Music Timeliner. It launched in late September 2026 and takes the same idea to films. The daily game gives every player the same eight movies, numbered by day, and you sort them by release year.

One film is already on the timeline with its year showing. The next card at the top shows a poster and a title, and you drag it onto the timeline before, after or between the films already there. Each card is checked as soon as it lands and turns green with its year when it is right. Tapping a card zooms in on the poster, and the link on each card opens the film on IMDb. Hard mode hides the years and has to be chosen before you start. At the end you get a score out of eight and a result to share, and the game keeps your streak and a chart of your scores.

Besides the daily set there is Endless, where you keep adding films with three lives and one skip, an archive of every earlier day, and a builder for custom timelines: search for films or for an actor or director, set the order and send the link to friends. Posters and data come from TMDB. Statistics stay on your device, and a transfer code moves them to another one.

Most film dailies ask you to name a movie from a clue. Movie Timeliner gives you the names and asks only when they came out. A day's set mixes eras and genres (a 1971 horror film beside a 2022 Viking film on 26 October), so it suits people who know release years more than plots or quotes.

How to play Movie Timeliner

  1. Open the daily game. One film is already on the timeline with its year.
  2. Look at the next card at the top, with its poster and title. Tap it to zoom in on the poster.
  3. Drag the card onto the timeline before, after or between the films already placed, by release year.
  4. The card turns green with its year when it is right. Carry on until all eight films are placed.
  5. See your score out of eight and share it, then play Endless, the archive or a custom timeline.

Tips

  • Use the films you are sure of as anchors and place the uncertain ones relative to them.
  • Sequels and remakes are easy to mix up. Check the poster style and the cast to tell which version it is.
  • Poster design dates a film well. Painted art points to the 1970s and 1980s, photo collages of the cast to later years.
  • Hard mode cannot be switched on mid-game, so choose it before you place the first film.
