Today's LINK board on desktop after two guesses, FIRE and LAKE, with dark green, gold and grey tiles and the coloured on-screen keyboard

LINK is a small Wordle-style game themed on The Legend of Zelda. Each day there is one hidden four-letter word from the series, and you have five guesses to find it, with coloured tiles showing which letters are right. Guesses can be ordinary English words or Zelda names.

About LINK

LINK is a word game on the Zwelda site, built on the Wordle formula but shrunk to four letters and five rows, with answers chosen from The Legend of Zelda. The example words in its rules give the flavour: ZORA, RITO and LINK itself. Alongside names of races, places and characters, the answer list also holds everyday words that matter in the games, such as fire, milk, bait or lava.

Each guess must be a valid four-letter word, either from the English dictionary or from the Zelda universe, so you can open with a common word and switch to Zelda names once you have a few letters. After you press Enter the tiles change colour: dark green for a letter in the right spot, gold for a letter that is in the word but elsewhere, and grey for a letter that is not in the word. A colourblind mode swaps these for orange and blue, and a hard mode makes you reuse every letter already revealed.

There is one puzzle a day for everyone, and a new one appears at midnight on your device's clock. The answers come from a fixed list of a little over 200 words that the game works through in order, so a word comes round again after about seven months. The game keeps your statistics and streak in the browser, lets you copy a result grid to share, has a dark theme, and needs no account.

It suits Zelda players who want a quick daily round shorter than a five-letter Wordle. Zwelda, the same site's five-letter game, and Hero Mode, its harder version, make a natural set to play together.

How to play LINK

  1. Close the rules box to see the empty grid of five rows of four tiles.
  2. Type a four-letter word, either an English word or a name from the Zelda games, and press Enter.
  3. Read the tiles: dark green means the letter is in the right spot, gold means it is in the word but in another spot, grey means it is not in the word.
  4. Use what you learned to choose your next guess.
  5. Find the day's word within five guesses, then check your stats, share your grid if you like, and come back after midnight for the next one.

Tips

  • Open with an ordinary English word that uses common letters, since dictionary words are accepted as guesses.
  • With only four letters, a gold tile leaves just three other places to try: rule them out one by one.
  • Think of short Zelda names (races, regions, characters) once you have two or three letters fixed.
  • Turn on the colourblind mode in the settings if the green and gold are hard to tell apart.
  • Turn on hard mode in the settings once the normal game feels easy: every revealed letter must then be used again.

Questions

How many guesses do I get in LINK?

Five, for a four-letter word.

Do my guesses have to be Zelda words?

No. Any valid four-letter English word is accepted, as well as words from the Zelda universe. The answer is always a word chosen for the Zelda series, which can be a name or an everyday word like fire.

When is there a new LINK puzzle?

Once a day, at midnight on your device's clock.

Is LINK free?

Yes. It plays in the browser with no account and no ads.

Does LINK have a hard mode?

Yes. Turn it on in the settings and every letter already revealed must be used in your next guesses.
