Pick which of two places has the higher figure for a statistic, in a daily quiz that gets harder as it goes.

Play Juxtastat (Urban Stats)

on urbanstats.org

A Juxtastat question on a desktop: which has a higher % of people who are Hindu, Victoria CMA or Calgary CMA, with an outline map of each for reference

Juxtastat is the daily quiz from Urban Stats, a site of statistics about cities and regions around the world. Each of the five questions names two places, such as two Canadian metro areas or two US congressional districts, and a measure like the share of people born in their state, and you pick which place is higher. The questions get harder as you go, and a streak counts your days.

About Juxtastat (Urban Stats)

Juxtastat is a short daily quiz built on the data behind Urban Stats, a site that compares cities, counties, districts, metro areas and countries on demographics, religion, housing, transport, weather and more. It is made by Kavi Gupta and Luke Brody, and the site is updated often.

Each of the day's five questions shows one statistic, for example the percentage of people who are Hindu, and two places side by side with a map of each. You tap the place you think has the higher value, a square fills green or red, and the next question appears. The places can come from different countries and levels, from small districts to whole provinces.

The set is the same for everyone and gets harder as it goes, so the last questions usually compare places that are close. At the end you see your score, your stats and streak, a share button that copies a row of coloured squares, and a countdown to the next quiz. Your history is kept with a user id on the device; signing in with Google syncs it, and friend ids let you compare scores with people you choose.

Beyond the daily, Juxtastat Infinite keeps serving questions until you run out of lives, and Retrostat replays a week of past questions. There are no ads; the site asks for donations instead.

It suits people who enjoy maps and numbers and want a quick daily test of how well they know the places around them.

Tips

  • Think about what kind of place each one is: urban or rural, young or old, rich or poor.
  • Watch whether the statistic is a percentage or a total, since size matters only for totals.
  • Later questions are close calls, so use local knowledge about the specific places.
