HowMany
Rate itOne how-many question a day: get within 20 percent of the real number in six guesses.
on howmany.at

HowMany is a daily estimation game. Each day there is one numbered question, such as how many popcorn servings a stadium sells per game, and you have six guesses to land within 20 percent of the real answer.
About HowMany
HowMany is a small web game built around a single question each day. The question always asks for a quantity from the real world, such as how many crumbs fall beneath a child's high chair during a meal, and it comes with a one-line hint. Questions are numbered from the first one on 2 July 2025, so 29 October 2026 brought question #485.
You type a number and submit it. An arrow beside your guess shows which way you missed: a down arrow means your guess was too low, and an up arrow means it was too high. The colour shows how far off you are. Orange is within 50 percent of the answer and red is further away. You win as soon as a guess lands within 20 percent of the true figure, and you get six tries.
Because the target is a band around the answer, the game rewards reasoning more than knowing the fact. A good first estimate built from things you know saves guesses, and after that each arrow halves the space left. Tapping the question number opens the history, where the last 100 days can be played. The stats panel keeps your win rate, streak and guess distribution in the browser.
It suits people who like Fermi questions and back-of-the-envelope maths, and a day's question takes a minute or two. There is no sign-up, and the page carries no ads.
How to play HowMany
- Read the day's question and its hint.
- Type a number in the box and press Submit.
- Read the arrow next to your guess. A down arrow means you guessed too low and an up arrow means too high.
- Use the colour to judge the size of your next move. Orange is within 50 percent of the answer and red is further off.
- Win by landing a guess within 20 percent of the real answer in six tries or fewer.

Tips
- Start with a sensible estimate built from things you know (capacity, time, rate) rather than a random number.
- After the first arrow, move by large factors until the colour turns orange, then narrow down.
- Only 20 percent accuracy is needed, so do not waste guesses on exact figures.
Questions
How close do I need to be?
Within 20 percent of the real answer, in six guesses or fewer.
Is there a new question every day?
Yes. Each day has one numbered question of the day, the same for everyone.
Do I need an account?
No. Your stats and streak are kept in your browser.
What does the arrow mean?
It points the way you missed. A down arrow says your guess was too low, so go higher next time. An up arrow says it was too high. Orange means you are within 50 percent of the answer and red means you are further away.
Can I play earlier questions?
Yes. Tap the question number to open the question history, which lists the last 100 days.
