Hemiscope Timeline daily #131 for 21 October: Communist Manifesto placed correctly at 1848 beside 1869 Suez Canal opens, with Emancipation Proclamation as the next card

Timeline is the history game on Hemiscope, a site of small daily puzzles from Kyro Game Studios. Each day you get seven events without dates, from ancient Egypt to the 2020s, and drop each one onto a timeline between the ones already placed, with three lives to spare. An Easy level has five modern events, and a Practice mode deals extra sets.

About Hemiscope Timeline

Timeline is one of the daily puzzles on Hemiscope, a small collection of geography, history and logic games made by Kyro Game Studios. The others include a country guessing game, a globe game, a stats game, a riddle safe and a ranking game, but Timeline is the one about history.

Each day's Regular puzzle has seven cards, each an event with no date: an invention, a war, a treaty, a discovery, a moment in sport or culture. The timeline starts with one anchor event already placed with its year, and the scale runs from 2560 BCE to the present. You drag each new card onto the timeline, or tap it and then tap a gap, earlier to the left and later to the right. A right card locks in green with its year shown; a wrong one slides to its true place in red and costs one of your three lives. Place all seven with a life left to win the day. Events from the same year count as right on either side of each other.

Easy has five cards, all from 1900 on and well known. The events come from a fact-checked bank of more than 240, so each day's set is new even though single events come round again. Everyone gets the same numbered set, and it changes at midnight in your own time zone. When you finish you get a grid of green and red squares to share, and Practice deals a fresh set whenever you want without touching your daily stats. An Answers page lists past days' solutions.

Progress is stored on your device and does not sync between the website and the iPhone app. The web version shows Google ads around the game, not over the board.

How to play Hemiscope Timeline

  1. Open hemiscope.com/timeline and choose Easy (five cards) or Regular (seven cards).
  2. Read the event on the current card; its date is hidden.
  3. Drag it onto the timeline, or tap it and then tap the gap where it belongs: older to the left, newer to the right.
  4. A right card turns green and shows its year; a wrong one moves to its true place in red and costs one of three lives.
  5. Place every card with at least one life left to win, then share your grid of green and red squares.

Tips

  • Use the anchor event and the date range at the top to judge whether a card belongs far back or near today.
  • Every placed card shows its year, so use each new landmark to judge the next card.
  • A wrong card still reveals its true year, which often settles where the next one goes.
  • Think in centuries before years: deciding whether an event is ancient, medieval or modern does most of the work.
  • Read event names closely for hints such as a country's former name or a technology that dates it.
