Odd One Out Daily #41 on desktop: round one of five, rule Island nation, with flag cards for Japan, Bangladesh, New Zealand and Singapore

Odd One Out shows four countries with their flags. Three share a rule, such as a continent, being landlocked, an official language, the side of the road they drive on or EU membership, and one does not; you get one tap to find it. A day has five rounds, and in the last two the rule is not named.

About Odd One Out (Hemiscope)

Odd One Out is one of the daily games on Hemiscope. Each round puts four countries on the board, each shown with its flag, and three of them share something. The rule can be a continent or region, a coastline, an official language, the side of the road they drive on, EU membership, flag colours, the hemisphere, the equator, being a monarchy or being an island nation.

You tap the country that does not fit, and you get one tap per round. After each tap the game shows the answer and the rule in a sentence, such as three island nations and one that is not. In the first three rounds a label above the board names the kind of rule; the last two rounds say only No clue, so you have to work out what the three have in common yourself.

A day is five rounds. Three right is a pass, each round is worth points, and your streak only grows on a perfect five. At the end you get a share grid of green and red squares. A Practice tab deals a new set of five whenever you want more, and an Answers page lists the solutions of past days.

Hemiscope is a free collection of eight short geography and history dailies by Kyle Tora, including Hemiscope itself, Atlas, Timeline, Vault, Ladder, Pinpoint and No Idea. The games play in the browser, and the free iPhone app has all eight plus live duels and an endless higher-or-lower Survival mode.

It suits players who like quick country facts and a game that takes a minute or two, and fans of grouping puzzles who want one built around the map.

How to play Odd One Out (Hemiscope)

  1. Open hemiscope.com/odd and stay on the Daily tab.
  2. Read the label above the board, if there is one: it names the kind of rule.
  3. Look at the four countries and their flags and tap the one that does not share the rule.
  4. Read the answer and the rule, then press Next round.
  5. In rounds four and five there is no label, so find what three of the countries share before you tap.
  6. After round five, press See result and share your grid if you like.

Tips

  • Driving side catches people out: Japan, the UK, India and much of southern Africa drive on the left.
  • In the No clue rounds, look for the rule the other three all share rather than the one country that looks strange.
  • Flags, hemispheres and the equator trip up many players, so picture each country on the map before you tap.
  • Check official languages carefully: several countries have more than one.

Questions

How many guesses do I get per round?

One tap per round. A miss does not end the day: you still play all five rounds.

What kinds of rules come up?

Continent or region, coastline, official language, driving side, EU membership, flag colours, hemisphere, the equator, monarchies and island nations.

What is a No clue round?

In the last two rounds the board does not name the kind of rule, so you work out what three of the countries share yourself.

When does a new set come out?

Every day at midnight in your own time zone.

Can I play more than once a day?

Yes. The Practice tab deals another five rounds whenever you want; only the Daily set counts for your streak.

Is there an app?

Yes, Hemiscope is free on iPhone, with all eight dailies plus live duels and a Survival mode.
