Guess the News #401 for 18 October 2026: an NPR headline about newborn cubs at the National Zoo with one word blank, and a first guess rated very hot

Guess the News shows one real news headline a day with a single word blanked out, and you guess the word. Each guess gets hot or cold feedback, a hint is there if you need it, and a new headline arrives at midnight US Eastern.

About Guess the News

Guess the News is a daily word game built on real headlines. Each morning headlines are gathered from outlets such as PBS, The New York Times, NPR, CNN and The Washington Post, one is chosen, and a single word in it is blanked out. Your task is to work out the missing word.

Every guess is rated from cold to hot, so you can tell whether you are getting closer in meaning, and an optional hint is there when you stall. The headline names its source, which often helps narrow things down. Puzzles are numbered and dated: puzzle 401, on 18 October 2026, was an NPR headline about a livestream of newborn cubs at the National Zoo.

The game leans towards surprising and light stories rather than the day's heaviest news. There are no accounts, no apps and no ads. When you finish you can share a Wordle-style result card, and past puzzles are kept in an archive. The daily headline can also arrive by email, through an RSS feed, or on Facebook, LinkedIn and X, and the game can be embedded in another site to show that day's puzzle, fully playable.

How to play Guess the News

  1. Open Guess the News and read today's headline with its blank.
  2. Type the word you think fills the blank and submit it.
  3. Use the hot and cold rating to judge how close your guess was.
  4. Reveal the hint if you are stuck, then keep guessing until you find the word.
  5. Share your result card and come back after midnight Eastern for the next headline.

Tips

  • Read the source name: a PBS or NPR headline tends to differ in tone from a CNN one.
  • Think about the part of speech the blank needs before guessing.
  • A warm rating means you are close in meaning, so try synonyms and related words.
  • Play through the archive to get used to the kind of stories picked.
