Grebe's Lineage daily No. 91 being played: a drawn tree from Reptiles through Episquamata to Snakes, with the hidden species branching off below the guess

Grebe is a free set of daily biology puzzles built on the tree of life, the shared-ancestry tree linking all living things. Four games are new each day and the same for everyone: find a hidden organism in Lineage, sort sixteen species into clades in Kinship, rebuild a slice of the tree in Branches and name a scrambled animal photo in Mosaic. There are no ads and no account is needed.

About Grebe

Grebe gathers several daily games around one idea: the tree of life, which connects every living thing through shared ancestry. Each game is numbered, new every day and the same for every player. It was made as a personal project by a player with an interest in evolutionary biology, and it runs in the browser on a phone or a desktop.

Lineage, inspired by Metazooa, hides an organism. Every guess lands on a drawn tree at the clade it shares with the answer, so each miss narrows down where the target sits; you can guess a whole group such as snakes or beetles to scout, take a hint that reveals the next branch, or give up. Kinship, inspired by Connections, gives you sixteen species with photos to sort into four hidden clades of four, with four wrong guesses allowed. Branches is Grebe's own: drag species from a tray onto a skeleton of named clades, using the worked examples already placed, then submit to lock in the right ones. Mosaic, the newest, shows an animal photo cut into shuffled tiles, and every wrong guess puts a little more of it back together while a table shows which traits your guess shares with the answer.

The days get harder through the week: Monday's boards are broad and forgiving, and later ones pick look-alike groups that reward knowing your clades. The species and tree come from open sources (Wikipedia and Wikidata for names, the Open Tree of Life for the tree, iNaturalist for photos), and the data set is updated now and then.

There is a leaderboard, stats, a discussion under each day's puzzle once you have finished it, and an optional account that only needs a name and a password. The site says it has no ads, no analytics and no third-party trackers. It suits naturalists, biology students and Metazooa players who want more than one tree-of-life puzzle a day.

How to play Grebe

  1. Open grebegames.com and pick one of the day's four games.
  2. In Lineage, type a species or a group and press Guess; each guess shows on the tree where it splits from the hidden species, so aim your next guess lower down.
  3. In Kinship, pick four species you think share a clade and submit them; find all four groups before four wrong guesses.
  4. In Branches, drag each species onto the clade it belongs to and press Submit; correct slots lock in and a wrong board costs a mistake.
  5. In Mosaic, guess the animal in the shuffled photo; each wrong guess restores more of the picture and shows which traits you share with it.

Tips

  • In Lineage, start with broad groups such as birds, insects or plants to find the right part of the tree before naming species.
  • In Kinship, think about ancestry rather than looks: whales sit with hoofed mammals.
  • Use the worked examples in Branches as anchors for the rest.
  • Play early in the week to learn the games: Monday's boards are the gentlest.

Questions

Are the games the same for everyone?

Yes. Each of the four games has one numbered puzzle a day, shared by every player.

How many games are there?

Four at present: Lineage, Kinship, Branches and Mosaic. The site says more tree-of-life games are in the works.

Do I need an account?

No. Your stats stay in your browser; an account is optional and only needed to sync across devices, appear on the leaderboard or post in the daily discussion.

Does Grebe have ads?

No. Its privacy page says it has no ads, no analytics and no third-party trackers.

Are the puzzles harder on some days?

Yes. The difficulty rises through the week, from gentle boards on Monday to tight look-alike groups at the weekend.
