Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is a hand-painted momentum game about a family of gibbons whose forest is being destroyed. Besides the story, a Daily Run gives everyone the same procedurally generated level each day to race on worldwide leaderboards.
About Gibbon: Beyond the Trees
Gibbon: Beyond the Trees comes from the studio Broken Rules and was released on Steam in May 2022. You play a gibbon swinging, backflipping and sliding through the canopy, chaining moves to keep your momentum. The story mode is a short adventure through a vanishing rainforest and into the human world beyond; Liberation mode is an endless procedural jungle where you free other gibbons.
Daily Runs arrived in September 2022 for players who have finished the story. Each day the game generates a new level that is the same for everyone, and you compete on worldwide leaderboards to see who gets furthest in the given time or swings fastest. A 2026 update added Sprints, short 800 m races that also refresh daily, and weekly Endurance Runs over 7,000 m, all with friends' leaderboards.
The game came out on Nintendo Switch in May 2022 and on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in June 2023, and both console versions include the Daily Run with its leaderboards. It is Steam Deck Verified, and Super Rare Games put out a boxed Switch edition in 2024.
It suits players who love flow and movement games and want a calm-looking but competitive daily challenge.
How to play Gibbon: Beyond the Trees
- Buy and install the game on Steam.
- Complete the story mode to unlock Daily Runs.
- Open the Daily Run menu and play the day's level: swing, flip and slide to keep your speed.
- Post your result to the leaderboard, then try the daily Sprint.
