Today's gaps board on a desktop: the movie title in blanks, with genres Drama, Music, runtime 2h3, release date 28 Aug 1998 and director Todd Haynes shown after two skips

gaps is a daily movie guessing game: the day's title is shown as blanks, and you name the film from clues such as genre, runtime, release date and director. Each wrong guess or skip opens another clue, and you have six guesses. A TV show bonus round, unlocked by watching a short ad, runs alongside, and an archive holds past days.

About gaps

gaps asks you to name one film a day. The title sits at the top as a row of blanks, one per letter, and below it a set of clue fields: genres and runtime are shown from the start, while release date, director, cast and plot stay hidden. Each wrong guess or skip opens the next field, so the fewer clues you need, the better. There are six guesses in all, and titles are picked from a list as you type, so spelling is not a problem.

The first movie went up on 5 May 2024 and the game numbers its days from there, so every player gets the same film on the same calendar day; the day turns over at midnight in your own time zone. The site also has a TV edition at gaps.wtf/bonus, which works the same way with a TV show and clues such as first air date, cast and characters. It opens after you watch a short ad.

A stats page keeps games played, wins and your current streak. The archive lists every past day you can still play, and a Random Movie button picks one for you.

faces.wtf runs the same way with blended movie star portraits. gaps suits film fans who like a quick daily guess where the length of the title is a clue in itself.

How to play gaps

  1. Open gaps.wtf and look at the blanks for the day's movie title and the clues already shown.
  2. Start typing a film title and pick it from the suggestions, or press Skip to open a clue without guessing.
  3. After each wrong guess or skip, read the newly opened clue: release date, director, cast or plot.
  4. Keep going until you name the movie, within six guesses.
  5. For a second puzzle, open the TV edition, watch the short ad it asks for and guess the day's show the same way, or catch up on missed days in the archive.

Tips

  • Guess as soon as you have a fair idea: a wrong guess is how you unlock the next clue.
  • Read every clue together before guessing again; two weak clues often point at one film.
  • Check the suggestions list carefully; similar titles and sequels sit next to each other.
  • Play the TV edition after the movie one; the same approach works for both.
