Forgery's puzzle for 19 October 2026: a Wuthering Heights passage with the missing sentence marked in the text, on novlr's plain cream page

Forgery is a daily reading game from novlr. It shows a short passage from a classic novel with one sentence taken out, and four candidates for the gap: the novelist's real sentence and three forgeries made by AI to imitate it. You get one guess to spot the real one. Puzzles get harder through the week, and it is free in the browser with no ads.

About Forgery (novlr)

Forgery is one of the daily fiction games on novlr, a small site made by Nathan Haslewood. Its question each day is simple: can you tell a real novelist's sentence from AI forgeries? The page puts it as "Can you beat the bots?"

The puzzle shows a passage from a classic book with a gap marked as the missing sentence. Below it are four sentences that could fill it, in a shuffled order. One is what the author wrote; the other three are forgeries made to match the voice, the period and the scene. On Monday 19 October 2026 the passage came from Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, with Nelly describing the Heights to young Linton, and the three forgeries each reworded her line about the old, dark house in a slightly different way. On 5 October it was a scene from Treasure Island.

You have one guess. If you are stuck, "Narrow it down" removes one forgery, and a second lifeline removes another and leaves a coin flip; a result with help still keeps your streak but is not counted as a clean solve. After the guess the page shows the real sentence, and a Share result button copies your outcome.

The week has a shape: puzzles ease in on Monday and build to a harder Sunday challenge. A new puzzle comes out at midnight UTC, the page counts down to it, and your streak is kept in your browser. There are no ads and no account.

It suits readers of classic novels and anyone who enjoys games about telling the real from the fake, such as Bluffpedia or Plausible. novlr also has a daily haiku game, a story maze called Escape or Die and Speechle, the same idea with famous speeches.

How to play Forgery (novlr)

  1. Read the passage, paying attention to the sentences before and after the gap.
  2. Read the four candidate sentences under 'Which sentence fills the gap?'.
  3. Pick the one you think the author really wrote and press Submit. You have one guess.
  4. If you are unsure, press 'Narrow it down' to remove one forgery; a second lifeline removes another.
  5. See the real sentence, share your result and keep your streak going day by day.

Tips

  • Check that the sentence leads into what comes after the gap: the real line often sets up the next one exactly.
  • Old novels have odd punctuation and rhythms, such as colons and semicolons in long sentences; a line that reads too smoothly or too neatly may be a forgery.
  • The forgeries often reuse the obvious words of the scene; the real line tends to have a detail or turn of phrase you would not predict.
  • Expect the puzzles to get harder towards Sunday.

Questions

Is Forgery free?

Yes. It plays free in the browser with no account and no ads.

When does a new puzzle come out?

At midnight UTC; the page shows a countdown to it.

Who writes the forgeries?

The site says the three wrong sentences are forged by AI to imitate the author.

Where do the passages come from?

From classic novels; recent puzzles used Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
