Footle, a seven-question quiz, Transfer Trail and a Top 10 list: four football puzzles a day.

Ball IQ is a free football quiz site and app with four daily puzzles: Footle, a Wordle for footballers' names, the seven-question Daily 7, Transfer Trail and a Top 10 list to complete. All four change at local midnight and are the same for everyone, and quizzes for 148 clubs and the big leagues sit around them for any time.

About Ball IQ (Footle and daily football puzzles)

Ball IQ is a football quiz site that plays in the browser with no account, with free iOS and Android apps from the same maker, Alexander Olsen. Its Today panel holds four numbered puzzles that change at local midnight, so everyone playing on the same calendar day gets the same set, and a counter shows how long until the next ones.

Footle is the football take on Wordle: the answer is the name a footballer goes by, usually a surname but sometimes a one-name legend, and you have six guesses, with each letter marked as in the right spot or the wrong spot. A hard mode makes you reuse what you have found. The Daily 7 is a short quiz of seven questions, mostly multiple choice, identical for every player, so a score can be compared with friends. Transfer Trail shows a player's career two clubs at a time and adds one more with every miss until you name him. Top 10 asks you to name all ten entries on a football list.

Around the daily four sit modes you can replay at will: a quiz for each of 148 clubs, league and tournament quizzes, record lists, Mystery Player, Stadiums and a draft game, with challenge links and one-to-one matches in the app. Past days of the daily puzzles can be played from an archive without giving away today's.

It suits football fans who want several short daily checks of their knowledge in one place rather than a single puzzle.

How to play Ball IQ (Footle and daily football puzzles)

  1. Open balliq.app or the Ball IQ app and look at the Today panel, which lists the four daily puzzles.
  2. In Footle, type a footballer's name on the keyboard and press Enter; green marks a letter in the right spot, yellow one in the name but elsewhere.
  3. Use the colours to narrow the name down and solve it within six guesses.
  4. Answer the seven questions of the Daily 7 and note your score.
  5. In Transfer Trail, name the player from his first two clubs; each miss reveals one more.
  6. In Top 10, name every entry on the day's list.
  7. Come back after midnight for the next set, or play earlier numbers from the archive.

Tips

  • Footle answers are the names players are known by, so a one-name star like Xavi can be the answer.
  • In Transfer Trail, an unusual early club often narrows the field more than the big later moves.
  • Turn on Footle's hard mode only once you are used to the word shapes: it forces you to reuse every letter you have found.
  • Use the app if you want streaks and reminders kept across days.
