on eruptle.app

Eruptle is a daily list-guessing game. Each day shows a prompt, such as the highest rated Westerns on IMDb, that describes a predetermined list of ten items, and you type guesses to find them. Eight wrong guesses make the volcano erupt, and first-letter and length hints are there if you are stuck.
About Eruptle
Eruptle calls itself a daily pseudo-trivia game. The prompt describes ten specific items, often a ranking from a source like IMDb, and credits the player who wrote it. You type a guess and press Guess: if it is on the list, it fills one of the ten slots and adds to your score; if not, it counts as a wrong guess.
The list is fixed in advance, so a guess can fit the prompt and still be wrong if it is not one of the ten chosen items. You have eight wrong guesses, shown as rising lava under the board, and can buy a first-letter or length hint for 20 points of your score. You can also give up to see the rest of the list.
The days are numbered, and everyone plays the same prompt on the same day. It suits trivia players who enjoy Sporcle-style list quizzes but want one short list a day.
Beyond the daily, a Daily Archives page holds past days and a Community Games page holds lists written by players, and anyone can create their own. It plays in the browser with no sign-up, and there is also a free iPhone app from its maker, Chase Allen.
How to play Eruptle
- Read the day's prompt and who wrote it.
- Type an item you think is on the list and press Guess.
- Correct answers fill the ten slots; wrong ones use up one of your eight misses.
- Buy a First Letter or Length hint if you are stuck; each costs 20 points.
- Find all ten before you run out of wrong guesses, or give up to see the list.

Tips
- Start with the most obvious answers; the lists are usually the well-known top of a ranking.
- Read the prompt closely: a source or date range in it rules out a lot.
- Save hints for the last few slots, where they help most.
- Spelling matters less than picking the right item, but check proper names before guessing.
Questions
Is it the same puzzle for everyone?
Yes. There is one numbered prompt a day for all players.
Why was my correct-sounding answer wrong?
The ten items are fixed in advance, so an answer can fit the prompt but not be one of the chosen ten.
Are there hints?
Yes. You can reveal the first letter or the length of an answer, each for 20 points off your score.
Can I play past days?
Yes. The Daily Archives page lists earlier prompts, and Community Games holds lists written by other players.
