Doople #1599 being played: SNAKE, PIT and STOP locked in green in a staircase of seven word boxes, with six across and down clues below, such as vipers lair and type of timer

Doople is a daily crossword with whole words in the boxes instead of letters. Six clues run across and down a staircase of seven boxes, and each answer is a two-word phrase made by two neighbouring boxes, so the words chain together, as in SNAKE PIT, PIT STOP, STOP WATCH. You are timed, there is a daily leaderboard, and past puzzles are in an archive.

About Doople

Doople takes the shape of a crossword and swaps letters for words. The grid is a staircase of seven boxes, each holding one whole word, and six clues numbered across and down, such as vipers lair or type of timer. Each clue's answer is a two-word phrase that fills two neighbouring boxes, and every box but the first and last is shared by two clues, so the puzzle works like a chain: SNAKE PIT leads to PIT STOP, and PIT STOP to STOP WATCH.

The rules allow for how phrases are really written. Compound words can be split, so CAMPFIRE can appear as CAMP and FIRE. The and a are usually left out, punctuation is rare, abbreviations such as Dr. are written out, and a single letter or number can be an answer. Correct words lock in place with a green border and wrong ones disappear, so you can test ideas. If you give up you can reveal the answers, but that breaks your streak and leaves you without a time.

There is one numbered puzzle a day, past 1,500 now, with a timer, stats for your best and average times, and leaderboards by day, week, all time and streak for players with an account. The daily itself plays without signing in, and an archive mode serves earlier puzzles. The site is plain and has no ads.

It suits players who like compound-word chains, phrase clues and short crosswords that take a few minutes.

How to play Doople

  1. Open the day's Doople and read the six clues, across and down.
  2. Find the two-word phrase each clue points to; its words fill the two boxes the clue's number joins.
  3. Type one word into each box; a box shared by two clues must fit both phrases.
  4. Correct words lock in place and wrong ones disappear, so try ideas freely.
  5. Fill all seven boxes to stop the clock, then share your time.

Tips

  • Start with the clue you are surest of, then think what phrases its words can start or end.
  • Work from a shared box: the word that ends one phrase begins the next.
  • Try splitting compound words: CAMPFIRE can be CAMP and FIRE.
  • Leave out the and a unless the phrase needs them.
