Cryptl is Quizl's daily cryptogram. Each day hides a quote from a named person, written as numbered blanks where the same number always stands for the same letter, and you decode it from word patterns and a few letters given at the start. Three hints reveal a letter each, a timer runs, and your stats keep your streak.
About Cryptl
Cryptl is a daily cryptogram on Quizl, a site of small daily puzzles. Each day hides one quote, the same for everyone, written out as a code: every letter is replaced by a number, and the same number stands for the same letter all through the quote. The date and the quote's source sit at the top, and a few letters are filled in to start you off.
You crack it by filling in letters. Select a blank and type, and every blank with that number fills in at once, so one-letter words, double letters and common endings give you a way in. If you get stuck you have three hints, each revealing a letter, and you can reset the board or give up. A timer starts when you press Start and keeps running even if you leave and come back, and on a phone the longer quotes scroll above the on-screen keyboard.
The quotes come from a dated list in the game, one per day, so everyone decodes the same saying on the same day. The numbers given to each letter are shuffled for each player, so two people compare the quote and their times rather than the code itself. The game keeps your games played, streaks and times, and you can share your result.
Cryptl is free to play with no account. The page carries ads, and Quizl Plus, a $1.99 a month subscription, removes them. It suits anyone who enjoys word patterns and the slow reveal of a cryptogram in a short daily.
How to play Cryptl

- Read the coded quote: each blank has a number, and the same number always stands for the same letter.
- Select a blank and type a letter; every blank with that number fills in at once.
- Use short words, apostrophes, repeated numbers and the letters already given to work out the rest.
- Use one of the three hints if you are stuck, then press Submit when the whole quote reads.

Tips
- Start with one-letter words: in English they are almost always A or I.
- Look for apostrophes: the letter after one is often T, S, D or RE.
- Common short words like THE and AND repeat often, so matching their letter patterns unlocks a lot at once.
