A Crossnum board under its logo and the line A crossword without the words, with rows and columns of equations and blank cells to fill

Crossnum is a daily number crossword. Each puzzle is a grid of interlocking sums, differences, products and quotients with some cells missing, and you fill them in so every row and column works. Every puzzle has exactly one solution and can be solved without guessing, and your time places you among the day's players.

About Crossnum

Crossnum describes itself as a crossword without the words. Each day brings one numbered board of interlocking equations: rows and columns of numbers joined by plus, minus, times and divide signs, sometimes with brackets, each ending in a result. Some cells are blank, and your job is to fill them so every equation holds.

The rules keep the arithmetic clean. The range of allowed numbers is shown above the board: 1 to 16 for cells and 0 to 64 for results on 3x3, 3x4 and 4x3 boards, 1 to 32 and 0 to 128 on larger ones. Numbers you multiply and divisors cannot exceed 12, and every step must give a whole number of zero or more, so there are no fractions or negatives. Each puzzle has one solution, reachable by deduction alone.

A new puzzle arrives every day at 2:00 AM, and difficulty follows the week: a Monday or Tuesday board takes two to four minutes, a weekend one five to ten. A line is checked only once it is full, and a full line that does not add up counts as one miss. Your solve time ranks you among the day's players, with fewer misses breaking a tie.

The daily plays with no account, and a streak is kept on your device; an account carries it between devices. Every puzzle of the current week stays open, so Monday's board can still be played on Thursday, while older weeks are closed. After solving you get a challenge link that lets a friend play the same board and compare times, and you can follow friends to see their daily results. There is a tutorial and a practice game, a light and dark theme, and the site can be installed as a web app.

Crossnum now shares its home page at crossnum.com with Sufuku, a sudoku-like daily puzzle from the same site with the same 2:00 AM reset and weekly difficulty curve.

It suits people who like sudoku and kakuro and want a numbers puzzle that rewards careful logic rather than speed with mental arithmetic.

How to play Crossnum

  1. Open today's puzzle from crossnum.com, or play the tutorial or a practice game first.
  2. Check the allowed number ranges shown above the board.
  3. Pick a blank cell and work out which value makes both its row and its column equation true.
  4. Remember that products and divisors stay at 12 or below and no step may give a fraction or a negative.
  5. Fill every blank so that all equations are correct; a full line that is wrong counts as one miss.

Tips

  • Start with equations that have only one blank; they can be solved directly.
  • Division and multiplication limits rule out many values quickly.
  • A cell shared by a row and a column must satisfy both, so test candidates in the crossing equation.
  • Play the Monday puzzle first if you are new; the week gets harder towards Sunday.
  • Where a line has two blanks, try each pair within the limits: only a few fit, and if more than one does, solve another line first.
  • Clear every wrong cell in a line before refilling it, or it counts as another miss.

Questions

Is the puzzle the same for everyone?

Yes. There is one numbered puzzle per day, and solve times are ranked among the day's players.

When does a new puzzle appear?

Every day at 2:00 AM. Monday's is the easiest and Sunday's the hardest.

Can I play past puzzles?

Yes, any puzzle from the current week. Puzzles from past weeks are closed.

Do I need an account?

No. The daily plays without one and your streak is kept on your device. An account carries the streak to your other devices.

Can I play against a friend?

Yes. After solving you get a challenge link; whoever opens it plays the same puzzle and you compare times. You can also follow friends to see their daily results.

Do I ever need to guess?

No. Each puzzle has exactly one solution and can be solved by deduction.

Are there fractions or negative numbers?

No. Every calculation step must give a whole number of zero or more.
