ClueBy #28 on a desktop browser: twelve sentence cards with blanks, the Mistakes left counter and the Submit button

ClueBy shows twelve real sentences with one word blanked out of each. Four words cover all twelve, and every sentence uses its word in a different sense. Pick three you think belong together and submit. Three mistakes end the game, and a hint costs one of them.

About ClueBy

ClueBy is a daily sorting puzzle built from real sentences. The board holds twelve of them, each with a gap where one word was taken out. Only four words are missing in total, so the sentences fall into four groups of three. The catch is meaning. A word like bark can sit on a tree or come from a dog, and each sentence in a group leans on a different sense of the same word.

You select three sentences and press Submit. A correct group leaves the board and shows its word filled in, along with the meaning used in each sentence and a link to where the sentence came from. A wrong group costs a mistake, and the game tells you when you were One away, meaning two of the three belong together. The third mistake ends the day. The light bulb button reveals the first letter of one sentence's word, starting with the easiest group, at the price of a mistake. Once three groups are found the last one fills in on its own. Groups are coloured green, blue, orange and purple, from easiest to hardest.

The sentences come from Tatoeba and Mozilla Common Voice, and ClueBy writes its own when no existing sentence fits. Puzzles are numbered from 1 October 2026 and get harder through the week, with Monday the gentlest and Saturday the trickiest. Earlier days sit on an archive calendar.

There is no account. Games, stats and streaks are kept in your browser, and results can be shared. The site is in English and Spanish. ClueBy comes from Ana Puzzle, the maker of Aura Clue. Until autumn 2026 the same address hosted a different ClueBy, a shuffled five-letter word solved from counts of letters in place.

How to play ClueBy

  1. Read the twelve sentences and look for ones that could share the same missing word.
  2. Select three sentences and press Submit.
  3. A match removes the group and shows its word. A miss costs one of your three mistakes, and One away means two of the three were right.
  4. Use the light bulb if stuck: it shows the first letter of one sentence's word and costs a mistake.
  5. Find three groups and the fourth is solved for you.

Tips

  • If the obvious word makes no sense in a sentence, think of a second meaning, such as the bank of a river.
  • Look at the words around each gap. An article or a preposition can show that two sentences share a word before you know what it is.
  • Boards often have a theme with decoys, so lock in the group you are surest of first.

Questions

When does a new ClueBy come out?

Every day at midnight, according to the site. The puzzle is numbered and is the same for everyone.

How many mistakes can I make?

Three. The third mistake ends the game, and each hint also uses one.

Where do the sentences come from?

Mostly from Tatoeba and Mozilla Common Voice. When none fits, ClueBy writes its own, and each found group links to its sources.

Can I play earlier puzzles?

Yes. The archive shows past days on a calendar.

Is it the same ClueBy as before?

No. Until around October 2026 the site ran a shuffled five-letter word game under the ClueBy name. The current game sorts sentences by their missing word.
