Today's Chessle board in Normal mode after a first guess: d4 grey, d5 green, Nf3 yellow, Nf6, c4 and e6 green, with a second empty row below

Chessle is Wordle for chess openings. Each day there is one numbered opening, and you play out its first moves for both White and Black on the board, six moves in Normal mode or ten in Expert. Each move turns green, yellow or grey, and you have six guesses to find the exact sequence.

About Chessle

Chessle, made by Jack Li, takes Wordle's colour clues and applies them to the opening moves of a chess game. Each day's puzzle is a numbered, named opening, such as the Zukertort Opening on 22 October 2026 (puzzle 1713). You enter a guess by making the moves on a board, alternating White and Black, and submit the whole line.

Every move in your line then gets a colour. Green means that move was played at that exact point. Yellow means the move is in the opening, but at a different point. Grey means neither side played it. You have six guesses. Normal mode asks for three moves each side; Expert mode asks for five each. Before your first guess you can also choose how moves are matched: by exact notation (Nxe5 and Ne5 differ) or by piece and squares (the same piece moving between the same squares counts, check or capture signs aside). The choice locks once you submit.

A Fill Previously Correct button replays the moves you already have green, and buttons to undo and flip the board make entering a line quick. At the end you can copy a grid of coloured squares to share.

It suits chess players who know their openings, and anyone who wants a short daily way to learn the main lines.

How to play Chessle

  1. Open Chessle and choose Normal mode (three moves each side) or Expert mode (five each).
  2. Optionally pick Exact Notation or Piece Square matching before your first guess.
  3. Drag the pieces to play an opening line for both White and Black.
  4. Press Submit and read the colours: green right place, yellow wrong place, grey not played.
  5. Adjust the line and try again, up to six guesses, then share your grid.

Tips

  • Start with a common, flexible line such as 1.d4 d5 or 1.e4 e5 to test the first moves.
  • A yellow move often means the moves are right but in a different move order.
  • Use Fill Previously Correct to replay your green moves before changing the rest.
  • Piece Square matching forgives a missing check or capture sign, which helps when you know the idea but not the notation.
