Chessguessr puzzle 1591 on 29 October 2026: a position from dmitry-lavrik v Gettingold72 with a first guess of five moves in grey and blue tiles

Chessguessr shows a position from a real online chess game and asks you to guess the next five moves that were played, alternating sides. After each guess the moves are coloured: right move in the right place, a move that is in the line but elsewhere, or the right piece type with the wrong move. A new position comes at midnight UTC.

About Chessguessr

Chessguessr is a Wordle for chess games. Each day it takes a position from a real game between two named players, with their ratings shown, and you enter the next five moves as they were actually played. You are not looking for the best line, only the one those players chose, which makes it a puzzle about reading a game as much as calculating.

After you submit a line of five moves, each tile is coloured. Green means that move was played at that point. Yellow means the move appears in the played line but at a different point. Blue means the same type of piece moved there, but the move itself is wrong, for example a different knight move. Notation has to match exactly, so a capture with check is not the same as the capture without it. You keep refining the line from the clues.

The position is numbered and dated, the same for everyone, and a new one appears every day at midnight UTC (puzzle 1591 fell on 29 October 2026). The site credits its maker as Assios, and the code is public on GitHub. It suits chess players who like guessing what a human would play, and Wordle players who know enough chess to read a position.

You get five tries to find the line. Every earlier puzzle can be replayed from the archive page, and a stats panel keeps your streak. There are no ads and no sign-up.

How to play Chessguessr

  1. Open Chessguessr and look at the day's position, the two players and whose move it is.
  2. Play five moves in a row on the board, alternating sides, as you think the game went.
  3. Press Submit and read the colour of each move tile.
  4. Keep the green moves, move the yellow ones to other slots, and use blue tiles to try another move with the same piece type.
  5. Find the exact five-move line within five tries, then share your result.

Tips

  • Start with forcing moves: captures, checks and recaptures are often what humans play.
  • Watch the notation; a check symbol makes the move different in the game's eyes.
  • A piece-type hint tells you which piece moved, so list that piece's legal moves.

Questions

When does a new Chessguessr position appear?

Do I need to find the best moves?

No. You are guessing the moves actually played in the game.

Right move in the right place, a move in the line but in the wrong place, or the right piece type with the wrong move.
