Cemantle is the English version of Cémantix. Each day hides one word, and every guess gets a temperature in degrees showing how close it is in meaning; once you reach the nearest thousand words a per-mille bar shows your rank. It usually takes dozens of guesses, and your final ranking is how early you solved it among the day's players.
About Cemantle
Cemantle is the English edition of Cémantix, a word game by the French developer known as enigmatix, inspired by David Turner's Semantle. Each day there is one secret word, and the only clue you get is how close your guesses are to it in meaning. Closeness is measured from a model trained on billions of words of text, so a guess can score warm because it shows up in the same kind of sentence, not only because it means the same thing. An opposite can be close.
Every guess gets a temperature in degrees Celsius, from icy negative numbers up to 100 for the answer itself. Once a guess lands among the thousand words nearest the secret, a per-mille score from 1 to 1000 appears with a progress bar, which tells you how near the top you are. The secret is a common word: a singular noun, an adjective, an adverb or a verb in its plain form. Proper nouns are generally not accepted.
A day usually takes dozens of guesses rather than six, so it suits players who like to wander through a vocabulary and narrow in slowly. When you find the word, the game tells you how many players found it before you that day, and you can see the list of words nearest to it. The puzzle is numbered by day, yesterday's word is shown on the page, and a history panel and a collaborate mode let you look back or play with friends. The site carries ads and costs nothing.
How to play Cemantle
- Type any English word into the box and submit it.
- Read its temperature: the higher the degrees, the closer it is in meaning to the secret word.
- When a guess reaches the nearest thousand words, watch the per-mille score and progress bar to see how close you are.
- Follow the warmest guesses, trying related words, opposites and words used in the same contexts.
- Keep going until you hit 100 degrees, then share your result and see where you ranked among the day's solvers.
Tips
- Start with broad, very different words (a food, a feeling, a tool, a place) to find which area of meaning is warm.
- Words that appear in the same sentences count as close, so try the things a warm word usually goes with, not only synonyms.
- Sort your guesses by temperature to keep the warmest ones in view.
- If you stall, open yesterday's nearest words to get a feel for how the model groups words.
Questions
When does Cemantle reset?
A new secret word appears every day at midnight US Pacific Time.
Is Cemantle the same as Semantle?
It is a separate game inspired by Semantle. It shows temperatures in degrees and a per-mille rank, and it is the English sibling of the French game Cémantix.
What does the ranking at the end mean?
It is your position among the players who found the word that day, not a score for how few guesses you used.
