Addition Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)

A sudoku with grey blocks of cells that work as written-out addition sums.

Today's Medium Addition Sudoku on PuzzleMadness (27 Oct 2026) with one digit entered: a 9x9 grid with grey addition blocks, the score panel and number buttons

Addition Sudoku on PuzzleMadness is a 9x9 sudoku with groups of grey cells, each laid out like an addition sum written in a column. The numbers in the upper rows of a group must add up to the number in its bottom row. A new grid appears every day from Easy to Tough.

About Addition Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)

Every row, column and 3x3 box holds 1 to 9 once each. The grey groups are sums set out as you would write them on paper: the top rows hold the numbers being added and the bottom row holds the answer. A single column of three cells reads as a one-digit sum, such as 3 + 1 = 4, while a block two cells wide reads its rows as two-digit numbers, so 47 above 32 above 79 means 47 + 32 = 79. In the site's first example the sums are 7 + 1 = 8, 6 + 5 + 2 = 13 and 3 + 5 = 8.

A two-digit total starts with 1 whenever the numbers added are single digits, and wide groups bring in carrying, which links the columns of the sum. That gives a different flavour from killer sudoku, where you only know a cage's total, not how its digits are arranged.

The grid works like every sudoku on PuzzleMadness: number buttons above and below it, an eraser, and a pencil mode for candidate digits. On a keyboard, the number keys enter digits, the arrow keys move between cells, Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number adds a pencil mark, and Delete or Backspace clears a cell.

PuzzleMadness is a free puzzle website run by Dewi, a software developer who started out making games for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii and DS and now builds the site as a hobby. It carries dozens of puzzle types, from classic sudoku to newer logic grids, and each one gets its own dated puzzle every day at each difficulty. Addition Sudoku comes in Easy, Medium, Hard and Tough versions plus a Mixed page, and the same day's Addition Sudoku puzzle is shared by everyone who opens it.

The site checks your grid as you go and tells you when it is finished; it does not publish solutions. Each completed puzzle earns a score, and scores feed a monthly and an all-time Addition Sudoku leaderboard, where only your best attempt at a puzzle counts. Older days stay in the archive, so a missed puzzle can still be played later and still counts toward the current month. Playing needs no account; a free registration gives you a username on the leaderboards and a cloud save. The pages carry adverts.

How to play Addition Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)

  1. Open today's Addition Sudoku page on PuzzleMadness and choose a difficulty from the menu above the grid.
  2. Click a cell and enter a digit with the number buttons above and below the grid or with the keyboard; the eraser button clears a cell.
  3. Fill every row, column and 3x3 box with the digits 1 to 9, each once.
  4. Read each grey group as a written addition sum, with the bottom row as the answer, and make the sum correct.
  5. Turn on pencil mode (the pencil button, or Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number key) to jot candidate digits in a cell.
  6. The site tells you when the grid is complete and adds your score; registered players appear on the leaderboards.

Tips

  • If single-digit numbers add up to a two-digit total, the total's first digit is 1.
  • In a wide group, work right to left as in written addition and watch for carries into the next column.
  • The answer digit is always larger than each digit added in its column when there is no carry, which removes small candidates from it.
  • Missed a day? Earlier puzzles are in the archive, and finishing one still counts toward this month's leaderboard.

Questions

How do you read the grey cells in Addition Sudoku?

As a written sum: the upper rows are added together and the bottom row is the answer. In a group two cells wide, each row is a two-digit number.

When does a new Addition Sudoku puzzle appear?

Once a day: each difficulty gets its own dated puzzle. PuzzleMadness does not state the exact changeover time.

Where can I see the solution?

PuzzleMadness does not publish solutions. The page tells you when your grid is correct and finished, or when you have made a mistake.

Is Addition Sudoku on PuzzleMadness free?

Yes. It is free to play in a browser with adverts on the page, and registering for the leaderboards is free too.
